Text of Gov. Schwarzenegger's speech (at CA GOP Convention on 2/24)
Mercury News ^ | Feb. 25, 2006 | Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger

Posted on 02/25/2006 10:18:13 AM PST by FairOpinion

I want you to know that I approach this job with an immigrant's optimism, and a businessman's commitment to fiscal discipline and a father's desire to keep our children safe and healthy. I can honestly say to you tonight that it has been such a joy, such a privilege for me to serve the people of California.

That's why I am humbled and so grateful to you for your support in the upcoming election.

It is an honor for me to be on the ballot with men like Bruce McPherson, our Secretary of State, and with my friend Tom McClintock, our next Lieutenant Governor. I want to say to both of these men, I am proud to be running with you.

I am proud that together we saved this state from bankruptcy.

We reduced our structural deficit by nearly 75 percent. We're paying down our debt and we're putting money into the rainy day fund. We rescinded the increase in the car tax. And we repealed the drivers licenses for undocumented Immigrants. And we fully funded transportation and education. And we became the only state in the union to ban junk food and sodas from our schools. We created the Sierra Nevada Conservancy, the largest preservation of land in our state's history. And we have record revenues flowing into our treasury.

We have done all of this while abiding by a basic Republican principle: we did not raise taxes.

Does anyone here doubt what will happen to our taxes if the other party reclaims the governorship? Think about that for a second. Republicans are the last line of defense against higher taxes, and I stand with my fellow Republicans.

Read the speech in its entirety at the link above. (Since I only found it at Mercury News, I had to excerpt it. If anyone finds it at a CARP or other website, from where it's OK to post the whole thing, please do.)

In the meantime, I highly recommend reading his entire speech.

No. Arnold's ACTIONS are Republican:

"We reduced our structural deficit by nearly 75 percent. We're paying down our debt and we're putting money into the rainy day fund. We rescinded the increase in the car tax. And we repealed the drivers licenses for undocumented Immigrants.

We have done all of this while abiding by a basic Republican principle: we did not raise taxes."

California's overhaul of its troubled workers' compensation insurance system has saved employers at least $8.1 billion over the last three years, and the benefits to the economy are expected to continue, according to a study sent to the governor and Legislature on Friday.

=====

Arnold DID bring CA back from the brink.

======

CONTRAST this with his rival, leftist Dem Angelides:

Angelides calls himself a champion of "progressive values." As state treasurer, he has pushed public pension funds to dump tobacco stocks, invest in urban renewal projects and pressure corporations into cleaning up the environment. A close ally of labor, he also supports abortion rights, gay marriage, gun control and driver's licenses for illegal immigrants.

If he makes it into a general-election race, his call for increasing taxes could pose problems; Schwarzenegger has been steadfast in opposing higher taxes.

So whom do you want elected in November as governor of CA?

Schwarzenegger/McClintock team or Angelides and a Dem lt. gov?

I would say the choice is very clear for everyone, who is a REAL conservative.

I will vote for Arnold and Tom. Dems offer nothing for the taxpayer but grief.

Appropriate for a party that is shoving a liberal down the party faithfuls throat.

Goods Luck. When they come for the party leadership don't look to Freepers for help. The party will reap what it has sowed and Freepers will be cheering for the mob.

My guess is that Wilson, Schwarzenegger, Ackerman, McCarthy, Sundheim and Parsky will grab the only lifeboat and leave the women to fend for themselves.

Are you saying that real conservatives SHOULD vote for leftist Democrats, even though there is a a total opposition between conservative and leftists philosophies?

This is like you are telling us that black is white and white is black.

The very definition of a conservatives is one who stands AGAINST the leftist philosophies the Dems espouse and implement.

A "real conservative who voted for the leftist Democrats" is an oxymoron.

That's exactly what the gang is trying to sell Repubulicans. That the gang is fiscally conservative. That Schwarzenegger is a conservative. That the gang isn't increasing taxes.

That the CAGOP is promoting a liberal for governor is sad. That the devil (Davis) made them do it is really waring thin with conservatives. That the CAGOP comes to FreeRepublic to troll for support isn't especially honest either. Talk about black is white. The CAGOP leadership with an account of FreeRepublic is a true oxymoron.

It takes ALL of us to get the job done.
Arnold is providing excellent, even visionary leadership.
I would think I lived in Heaven if he were our governor. People with narrow and defeatist minds are why Dino Rossi had his legitimate election STOLEN from him up here. Don't shoot yourselves in the foot, or shoot off your mouths and lose the only REAL hope you have.

The very definition of a conservatives is one who stands AGAINST the leftist philosophies the Dems espouse and implement.

The sure sign of a ideologically bankrupt personality. Against symbols rather than for values. Iconic negativity instead of a positive affirmation of principles.

The CAGOP leasdership is against Democrats? Conservatives clearly understand that! But what are they for ... beside victory, regardless of means or the expedient abandonment of traditional principles?

Folks who go whoring usually have three remarkably similar personality traits. They lack a firm set of core values and a sense of self worth. They rely on others for positive affirmation and constantly seek public approval. They don't know the difference between right and wrong and feel betrayed when they are criticized because they made a wrong decision.

No surprise here. If the State of Washington wants him, California would be glad to send him north. Hang onto your wallets.

I'll give credit where credit is due.

For Sure Schwarzenegger is for a pro business endowment in CA. I think he can bring business here and keep some from leaving IMO.

About the debt reduction by 75% line...
I think all that was, was the increase of higher property taxes to the state with all the old $185k homes selling for $650k. So the property tax to the state rose from 1.5k a year to 8k for the one house.
That has been the big money coming in IMO.
