One of these postulates, from the beginning, was that the Iraqi people, whatever their tribal differences, would suspend internal divisions in order to get on with life in a political structure that guaranteed them religious freedom.

The accompanying postulate was that the invading American army would succeed in training Iraqi soldiers and policymkers to cope with insurgents bent on violence.

This last did not happen.

Here are the central points of the article. I cannot argue with any of it.

If Buckley is right it will be a dark age for Iraq and a bonanza for Iran and Al Qaeda. Africa can't get past the tribe either and look at the life they have. It may be the case that the worst tendencies of human nature are the Dominant ones.

The US will be vastly worse off if this fails. All the worst elements will unite, encouraged by that failure.

...army would succeed in training...

The United States Army is not the Department of Education. We dominate in ways that the Romans couldn't even imagine and yet idiots in this country continue to chant "failure".

If success is turning the Iraqis into Americans, then by all means, lets annex Iraq.

If success is reducing the state sponsorship of terrorism, then we have aced our first test, and need only to school Iran and Syria to get an A+ for the semester.

The fastest way out of Iraq is through Tehran and Damascus.

In point of fact, we are winning. The insurgency led by AQ does not represent a military threat to the Iraqi government. They have been foiled in every attempt to prevent the movement towards the formation of a democratic government. Over 8 million Iraqis voted in the latest election. The violence has been exaggerated and doesn't represent what is going on as a whole in a nation of over 25 million people. The naysayers have been predicting dire consequences before we ever entered Iraq and they have been wrong every time. Buckley is buying the MSM version of events.

It's a hoot to see such utter nonsense from the likes of Buckley. The fact, and it is an undeniable fact, that Iraq didn't absolutely implode over this Mosque bombing, is proof positive that we ARE winning. Yes, there was a violent reaction. The Iraqis and the US got it under control right away. In the old days this would have caused a holy war the likes of which we'd be observing for years.

I've never seen a rag tag group so determined to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Buckley thus alligns himself with the likes of Teddy, John, Hillary and Jane. William, get a grip.

Buckley is a smart man.......or at least used to be.

His tense is wrong here. The correct sentence should be, "This last has not yet happened."

I guess old men lose patience. I guess Buckley has become an old man.

Perhaps not, but Victor Davis Hanson can. (From Radioblogger.com.)
