Nike and Bode spent a lot of money and time telling us he just didn't care about winning...he had a different drummer and standard. I wonder if Nike now sees a marketing difference between a winner who doesn't care and a loser who doesn't care :)
Well said, NautiNurse. I sure feel sorry for Bode's alternate, sitting at home (or wherever) watching Bode's performances these two weeks and hearing him rave about how he "got to party and socialize at an Olympic level."
I love Bode's Nike site!( I think the website is for a younger and groovier crowd.)
Well, who the heck is going to care about him after these olympics besides the groupies? I never heard of him before and I could care less now.
Wow, I haven't seen anything from him throughout these Olympics like what you have described.
I think Nike understood exactly the spokesperson they gave us...
Of course, you are free to prattle on about the has-been who denied a hungry, eager Olympic skiing hopeful an opportunity to compete and show pride for their sport.
Could you please explain what you mean about the nickname? I went to the NBC bio site, where I found this:
"Ohno was not named for Apollo, the Greek god of sunlight and prophecy. His unique first name was given to him by his father, who combined the Greek words "Ap," meaning "steering away from," and "lo," meaning "look out, here he comes." Yuki says his son's middle name, "Anton," means priceless. Ohno also goes by the nickname "Chunkie," a holdover from his youth, when he was one of the stockier members of his roller skating team."
...but I don't know what that has to do with a nickname made up to make him a star. Thanks.
Oh prolly just athletes and people who follow skiing...And his millions of fans and the people who he has motivated into sports....
Just for starters.
I am sorry....but you sound so bitter.
Why? Did he do something to you?
Like I said, I don't know much about him...just what I have seen during the times I have watched, this last two weeks..so maybe I am missing something, but, from what I have seen, I can't complain about him.
Especially considering the behaviour of some of the athletes, like Shani Davis and the other skater from Texas, who did whine.
The girl snowboarder did hot-dog, and lost the gold medal..she at first tried to make a false excuse, but then later admitted that she goofed.
So...I don't hold it against her...she is the one that will live with the Silver, knowing it should have been Gold, not me.
How is Ohno's behavior the way you see it, going to affect your life?? And is it worth sounding so bitter?
*sigh* Life is good. :]
Your analogies are downright goofy this evening; clouded by your groupie crush on a careless loser with screwed up priorities.
I feel sorry for the guy. He obviously thinks that this role of Olympic hero has been thrust upon him (and it was.) He could have turned down the covers of Time and Newsweek, he could have said no to the commercials, etc. I think he's a pretty torn guy between wanting to remain pristine in his lifestyle and wanting the attention and money. I hope he can solve these contradictions and go on and ski how he wants to ski. He has the talent, but somehow lost the hard work ethic that got him where he was.
I agree with the first part of your last post to me...
But, I, like I have noticed other freepers, have not seen bad behaviour like you are describing exhibited by Apollo Ohno.
And, please, no more about his name...his parents named him, he didn't have any say...and besides it is a stupid reason so dislike someone.
Yes, I do like Bode-I like what he stands for- even tho I think he is HOT, he is not really my type and he is a little too young for me. I like older men.
:]
I have been around a good deal of celebrities in my years ( I think many of them are twits)- I don't get star struck- Money does not impress me...but when I meet a real person, who has gusto~ who goes up to the edge and conquers life - I appreciate them in a big way.
I understand that you may not appreciate the same things in people.
That is ok.. no need to get all HOT under the collar about it. :]
Yes, I saw that clip. I agree Nike knew what kind of spokesperson they had and hyped...but he would never have even crossed their minds had he not been a winner, favored to take home many medals...medals Bode claims not to care about. It's actually kind of funny, Nike got what they advertised even though we both know that's not what they were looking for.
What does he stand for?
I am not even that huge of fan. I like him and all..
I just know there was a human being out there, in front of the world- who hasnt done anything to hurt anyone- and the media , and people on this thread- are trying to destroy him because he didn't win these past two weeks. People who have never participated in the level of sports he has. Bode is an American and I dont really care if he screwed up- it is un~American to try to destroy him just because he didn't win what every one else makes sound so easy.
I think it is behavior unbecoming serious minded adults.
What does it look like to the world that there is large, public feeding frenzy over Bode's Hide for *not* winning.
And that is my two cents on the topic.
