Dubai Ports World set to manage new Busan port in South Korea

The President of the republic of Korea, Roh Moo-Hyun, yesterday officially opened the new state-of-the-art Busan Newport Co (PNC) terminal, marking the completion of the first phase of a development, which is expected to become one of the largest in the world in terms of capacity.

DP World will manage and operate the port for 50 years starting from the date of operation.

The overall terminal has a conservative estimated handling capacity of 5.5 million TEU and will stretch 3.2 kilometers.

The facility is forecast to become the gateway hub of North East Asia because of its strategic location between Japan and North East China. The surrounding area has an extremely strong indigenous market and transportation infra-structure which makes the geographic position ideal for such a large container hub facility.

In addition, a total area of 4.08 million square meters has been designated as a free trade zone which will encompass international facilities for integrated logistics affiliated industries.

Rob Walker, executive vice-president, DP World and PNC, said: "We are exited about the quality services we are able to offer customers at Korea's new mega hub container terminal with sophisticated terminal equipment and software implemented on site. They are a direct result of the innovative approach taken by PNC partners in the development of the technological infrastructure."

And they want to diversify because they know someday the oil is going to run out or an alternative found.

Plus the UAE isn't saudi arabia, they are the most pro-western Gulf state.

Thanks to the Congress, the United States looks like a bunch of bumpkins in our attitude toward this transfer.

They have been a big company for a long time. It is funny in a way. We complain about lazy A rabs not willing to work or contribute anything to western society etc..
Then when a A rab operation has success and enters the world of western civilization and competes in western ways we say don't play our game. If we see overweight Shieks driving around in limos with great airconditioning units, we say hey you camel humper, why are you not riding a stinky camel. The ironies are somewhat amusing. And not every Arab wants to bite the hands that makes them rich. And those in power positions don't want the zman of the world getting in the way, they rather rubbed the crude out. Just some observancies some of us surely entertain on occasions.
NOTE: Of course I don't like some clown in a robe dripping with US bucks, promoting any form of clandestine activities to weaken or hurt westernized humans and societies.

And there you have the reason for this kerfluffle: the unions do NOT want that technology and efficiency at "their" ports, because they won't be able to steal entire cargo containers any more.

"Give the man a cigar" The Demoncrats could care less about the deal, other than the union opposition to the deal because DWP will employ advanced technology and automation and not have a bunch of union guys sitting on their _ _ _ _ watching the cranes work. You can go to any number of ports in this country and see an automated bulker being unloaded, while a large group of longshoreman sit around and drink coffee. Why, because it is in the contract, you have to hire them, even if they are not needed.
