P&O Ports New England provides terminal and stevedoring operations for a container feeder-service to and from the Port of Halifax, Nova Scotia. Portland International Terminal (PIT) is the home for this weekly container feeder service. P&O Ports has increased the quality and efficiency of service to its container customers in Portland by using a mobile harbor crane.
P&O Ports also provides stevedoring, stores and line handling to the seasonal cruise vessels that visit Portland as a port of call.
Portland's natural deep-water, ice-free port has long attracted shippers to the harbor, which is one of the best protected on the East Coast.
Presently PIT houses both the container and passenger operations for the Port of Portland. Passenger operations will soon be moved to a new facility in the heart of the Old Port section and this relocation will triple the size of the area available for containers.
The port encompasses 2,074 acres and is only 3.5 miles from the open ocean. Its main ship channel is 1,100 ft. wide, with a depth of 45 ft. at mean low water (MLW). The inner harbor and most piers have a depth of 35 ft. at MLW. More than 700,000 tons of dry cargo passes through the Port of Portland annually, including such cargoes as forest products, scrap metal, coal, salt, tapioca, and fertilizer.
P&O Ports' core business in the New England area is the damage-free and rapid discharge of automobiles. In this region P&O Ports discharges some 80,000 automobiles annually - Volkswagens and Subarus. Steamship lines calling on a regular basis include Mitsui O.S.K. and Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK), all under contract to the transportation divisions of VW and Subaru. P&O Ports enjoys an enviable record of exceptionally low damage frequencies, the result of company-wide training and monitoring of procedures.
P&O Ports and The Massachusetts Port Authority have teamed up to operate the Black Falcon Cruise Terminal. With more than 100 ship calls per year, the port is now considered one of the fastest growing high-end cruise markets in the country. Our customers include: Carnival Cruise Line, Crystal Cruises, Cunard Line, Holland America Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Royal Caribbean International, Seabourn Cruise Line and Radisson Seven Seas Cruise Line. The Black Falcon Cruise Terminal now serves over 125,000 passengers each year. More than 100,000 passengers either embark or disembark from vessels to various destinations, while another 25,000 visit Boston as a port of call. Home Port services are provided to all major cruise lines including destinations to Bermuda, the Canadian Maritimes and the St. Lawrence River.
Port Overview
The Port of Boston's public facilities are owned and operated by the Massachusetts Port Authority, which is funded entirely by user fees and revenue bonds. These facilities handle more than 1.3 million tons of general cargo, 1.5 million tons of non-fuels bulk cargo and 12.8 million tons of bulk fuel cargos annually.
The Port of Boston container cargo is carried via four different services; direct vessel call, barge via New York, feeder vessel via Halifax, and a small amount of over-the-road containers. Massport has fully funded and completed an interim program to dredge Conley Terminal to 45 ft. and Moran Terminal to 40 ft.
P&O Ports handles approximately 80,000 units of import automobiles per year as well as export RORO cargoes.
Port Overview
Situated between New York and Boston and at the entrance of Narragansett Bay, the Port of Davisville in Rhode Island provides one of the best deep-water ocean ports on the east coast. Major cargo arriving at the port includes automobiles, quarried stone, and general cargo. The port has three major piers with over 6,800 linear ft. of deep-water dockage with onsite rail tracks.

In Port Jersey, Jersey City and Port Newark, P&O Ports discharges or loads over 400,000 automobiles and RoRo vehicles annually. P&O Ports' low damage frequency record and timely discharge provides a competitive edge and best practice standards to these premier RoRo carriers.
The Port of New York & New Jersey is located at the center of a market of 17 million people - the most concentrated and affluent consumer market in the world. Its long-held status as the premier port on the Eastern seaboard makes the Port of New York & New Jersey the primary destination for many North Atlantic shippers, with another 79 million consumers within overnight delivery distance.
Operation of the port is overseen by the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey, a bi-state agency formed to promote trade and commerce in the region.
Over 3,000,000 TEU's of container traffic are handled annually. That's nearly half the North Atlantic ocean borne general cargo. A comprehensive intermodal network provides access to inland markets. There is immediate access to four interstate highways. Trains depart regularly from 14 intermodal yards, which combine to offer the highest volume double-stack rail service on the Eastern seaboard.
In recent years, a massive capital improvement program has deepened channels, added more lift capacity through state-of-the-art container cranes, built on-dock rail facilities, enhanced security measures, upgraded roadways and utilities and renovated thousands of square feet of warehousing.
Under a 20-year operating agreement with the City of New York, P&O Ports North America, Inc. is the exclusive provider of terminal management and stevedoring services for the New York Cruise Terminal. Among P&O Ports' customers are Carnival Cruise Line, Cunard Line, Crystal Cruises, Holland America Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Line, Seabourn Cruise Line, Silversea Cruises, NYK Cruise Co. Ltd, Hapag Lloyd and Clipper Cruise Line.
Each year, the terminal hosts the New York City Fleet Week with the U.S. Navy. It is also home to the Show Piers on the Hudson, which hosts an array of trade shows, corporate functions, fundraisers and special events. P&O Ports North America, Inc. also manages the Show Piers operation.
The New York Cruise Terminal is a modern international cruise terminal. It consists of three, 70,000 sq. ft. finger piers with five, 1037 ft. long berths capable of docking five cruise vessels simultaneously, including the new mega-class cruise ships. It has parking for 1,000 vehicles and handles over 215 vessel calls with more than 850,000 passengers per year. The NYCT is conveniently located on the Hudson River in the heart of Manhattan and is only a few blocks west of Time Square on the West Side of 12th Avenue between 46th and 54th Streets.
P&O Ports North America, Inc. is a 50% joint venture partner in Delaware River Stevedores (DRS), which provides stevedoring and terminal services in Philadelphia, PA, Camden, NJ, and Wilmington, DE.
Situated on the Delaware River with easy access to the Atlantic Ocean, the Port of Philadelphia and Camden specializes in the handling of a variety of international cargoes. One of the busiest ports on the U.S. Atlantic Coast, the Port's diverse capabilities brings over 3,000 ships to load and offload at its facilities each year. The Port of Philadelphia and Camden has an excellent reputation for servicing many cargoes that require specialized handling, including meat, fruit, cocoa beans, steel, and forest products such as plywood, paper and pulp.
With over 21 million feet of refrigerated and temperature controlled storage, the Philadelphia port region has become a major distribution center for reefer imports, including fruit from Chile and meat from Australia and New Zealand.
It was largely at the Tioga Marine Terminal that Philadelphia's Chilean fruit business grew from a small, steady stream over twenty years ago to the regional economic powerhouse it is today.
Operated by DRS, Tioga is a multi-purpose, 96.5 acre facility, that is uniquely suited to handle containers and break bulk cargoes. Tioga has two container cranes and a full array of equipment from yard hustlers to forklifts to fulfill almost every capacity range. There is over 500,000 sq. ft. of covered shed space with 250,000 sq. ft. of refrigerated space located just 90 ft. from vessel's hook. DRS has just entered into a new 10-year lease on the property and the Philadelphia Regional Port Authority is committed to expanding the existing shed space to accommodate growth in the break bulk trade.
The Philadelphia Cruise Terminal at Pier 1 is located 85 miles up the Delaware River from Cape Henlopen at the former Philadelphia Navy Yard. This prime location is equally distant (5 miles) from center city Philadelphia and Philadelphia International Airport. The modern terminal is a 44,000 sq. ft. facility that was converted from a naval welding shop. On site facilities for U.S. Customs, U.S.D.A. and I.N.S. were constructed in adherence to each agency's guidelines. An expansive area has been designated for waiting passengers, embarkation and debarkation processing, and luggage lay down. Check-in counters are mobile and can be configured to maximize processing and conform to each respective cruise line's preferred setup. There are parking facilities for up to 800 vehicles. A covered skywalk that is adjacent to the terminal connects to a fully articulated boarding platform located on the pier, enabling gangways to reach passenger doors to a height of 30'. The skywalk is accessible through a head house that contains an elevator, and escalator and stairway. The 910' long by 80' wide pier has two berths, the primary being 1,060' (including mooring dolphin) and the secondary being 760' in length. Each berth has been dredged to 30' MLW.
Delaware River Stevedores provide luggage handling and storing services at the Cruise Terminal.
Camden, New Jersey's busy Beckett Street Terminal is a one-stop, full service break bulk and bulk facility that handles steel, project cargo, wood products, cocoa beans and bulk cargoes. Ranked #1 in the country for plywood, Camden handles over 400,000 imported tons/year. This facility, which features excellent highway and rail connections, is committed to fully meeting the needs of today's shipper in an efficient, expert, and cost-effective manner.
DRS provides labor and equipment to service Del Monte's year-round perishable business in Camden, New Jersey, Pier 5 Broadway. Del Monte's annual throughput continues to grow with a diversified product mix that is handled through 185,000 sq. ft. of refrigerated storage space. Pallets of breakbulk fruit as well as containers are discharged/loaded on combination-type vessels that call each week at the facility. On an annual basis, close to 600,000 tons of cargo are currently discharged from 65 vessels.
The Port of Wilmington, at the mouth of the Delaware River, 65 miles from the Atlantic Ocean, is a full service port. Annual tonnage, consisting of imports and exports of fresh friut, containers, automobiles, breakbulk and bulk cargoes, amounts to over 5 million tons. The port has direct access to major interstate highways. Abundant cold storage space is available.
The Port of Baltimore, on the north end of the Chesapeake Bay, is one of the largest operations in the company portfolio. P&O Ports has a contract with the Maryland Port Administration to operate Seagirt Marine Terminal and Dundalk Marine Terminal in Baltimore. These contracts were awarded through a competitive public bid process open to all qualified terminal operating companies.
Effective November 1, 2001, P&O Ports was appointed to operate the Seagirt Marine Terminal for a six-year term with an option to extend for an additional six years. P&O Ports provides customers with full service terminal and stevedoring operations as the contract operator for Maryland International Terminals. Effective March 2005, P&O Ports signed a multi-year contract to operate at Dundalk Marine Terminal.
In addition to the above contracts, P&O Ports contracts directly with steamship lines and cargo interests, providing services at all Marine Terminals in the harbor.
P&O Ports' annual cargo volumes in the Port of Baltimore are as follows: 450,000 TEU's; 350,000 vehicles; and over 575,000 tons of RoRo & project cargoes. P&O Ports Baltimore offers Maintenance and Repair services of containers and chassis at the Seagirt and Dundalk Marine Terminals. P&O Ports maintain a mobile fleet that can travel between both terminals and offer roadability services as well as major repairs.
RoRo and Automobile Operation
P&O Ports provides RoRo stevedoring services in a number of Baltimore terminals including the Fairfield Marine Terminals (Masonville, Chesapeake, and Atlantic).
P&O Ports North America is a 50% joint venture partner in CP&O. CP&O performs stevedoring services at all major facilities in the Port of Hampton Roads. These include the three marine terminals operated by Virginia International Terminals, in Norfolk, Portsmouth, Newport News and Lambert's Point Docks, Inc., a Norfolk Southern Subsidiary.
CP&O's container carrier customers include Evergreen, Columbus, CSAV, Zim, P&O Nedlloyd, China Shipping, Contship, Hyundai Merchant Marine, MOL, APL, Hanjin, Hapag Lloyd, Shipping Corporation of India, United Arab, K-Line, Maersk and Cosco. Breakbulk and RoRo customers include L&C Marine, Pan Ocean, HUAL, Safmarine, Clipper Line, Hyundai Merchant Marine, NSCSA, Wallenius Wilhelmsen, Atlantic Ro-Ro and Eastern Car Liner.
CP&O services Mitsui O.S.K. and NYK Line automobile carriers, bringing Nissan and Subaru vehicles into Newport News, with an annual volume of 48,000 units. CP&O is the exclusive stevedore for Perdue frozen poultry, with export volumes of approximately 50,000 tons.
The cruise vessels calling at Hampton Roads are serviced by CP&O at the Nauticus International Pier. CP&O provides all baggage handling services, line handling and ship provision loading.
Port Overview
The Ports of Hampton Roads has key natural advantages; 18 miles from the open sea, a deep channel, and ice free year round. Hampton Roads continues to develop and enhance these natural advantages to ensure effectiveness in an increasingly competitive industry. State-of-the-art terminal facilities, an efficient labor force, and excellent intermodal capabilities are a result of these ongoing enhancements.
In Miami, P&O Ports is a 50% owner of the Port of Miami Terminal Operating Company (POMTOC), which operates the only multi-user container facility in the port, on 117 acres with 12 container cranes. Annual throughput volume is over 500,000 teus.
Stevedoring services are provided by Eller-ITO, a 50% joint venture company. Annual volume is 600,000 containers for steamship lines including Columbus, Crowley, P&O Nedlloyd, Contship, Lykes, CP Ships, COSCO, Yang Ming, Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K-Line) and Seaboard Marine.
In addition to container operations, P&O Ports, through its joint ventures, also services RoRo and general cargo vessels. Stevedoring, baggage handling and terminal services are provided for more than 700,000 passengers on Royal Caribbean Cruise Line and Norwegian Cruise Line.
Port Overview
The port offers direct access from the Gulf stream shipping lanes via Government Cut, a 500 ft. (152.4 mt) wide, 42 ft. mean low tide (12.8 mt) draft shipping channel. The container berths are on the southeast end of the island seaport, a mere nautical mile from the sea buoy. A 1000 ft. diameter turning basin lies immediately to the east of the container facility, and another 2000 ft. turning basin to the west is presently being dredged to 42 ft. The short distance to the Gulf stream shipping lanes, convenient turning basins and year-round absence of fog, guarantee quick and direct access between the Port and trade routes.
With the recent addition of two new 65-long-ton super post-Panamax container cranes, the Port of Miami solidified its position as being the largest and most modern container terminal in the Southeastern United States. These cranes join the three Panamax and seven post-Panamax, bringing a total of twelve gantry cranes operating at Miami's dynamic container port. All of the cranes are owned and maintained by the Port, and leased to the stevedoring companies. Cranes are available for operation 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
The cranes are aligned on a single 6,000 ft. berth capable of handling seven container vessels simultaneously.
In Gulfport, P&O Ports performs stevedoring and terminal operations for Chiquita and Crowley containers, which total about 75,000 units annually. Approximately 40,000 container moves carried by Crowley are on RoRo vessels plying the Caribbean.
Two shipside freezers operated by P&O Ports accommodate poultry, poultry parts and other frozen cargoes and account for about 200,000 tons of export cargoes annually.
Port Overview
Gulfport, Mississippi is one of P&O Ports' most southern ports. Located on the U.S. Gulf coast, the Port consists of nine berths ranging from 525 to 750 ft. in length. All berths at the Port of Gulfport are multi-use, multi-purpose but are primarily assigned as follows: three container berths, two break bulk/refrigerated cargo berths, and four general cargo berths suitable for break bulk, neo-bulk and project cargo. Container operations are supported with ships gear.
The Port Authority's 100,000 sq. ft. freezer facility is located on the Port's West Terminal and is operated by P&O Ports. The facility includes a 3,000 sq. ft. blast freeze capacity, an ammonia-based cooling system capable of maintaining subzero temperatures, and available on-site USDA quality control inspection services with computerized reporting.
Maintaining one of the Gulf's most diversified and modern port facilities and operations takes experience, an excellent group committment to operating safely, superior management and one of the most comprehensive stevedoring and terminal operating services in the United States. P&O Ports has serviced the Port of New Orleans for decades and has successfully taken on every challenge. P&O Ports Louisiana has an impressive equipment inventory of a full range of modern cargo handling equipment including a fleet of forklifts, tractor-trailers and mobile cranes with lift capacities of up to 300 tons. P&O Ports Louisiana, Inc. (formerly Baton Rouge Marine) is the largest and most experienced terminal operator, stevedore, steamship agency and line handler in the Port of Baton Rouge. P&O Ports has been the port's primary general cargo stevedore and terminal operator since 1955.
P&O Ports provides customers with first-class facilities including modern warehousing and clean, modern transit sheds for cargo storage, one heavy lift crawler cranes and a fleet of forklifts. Port Overview
The docks provide deep-water (45 ft.) access to 3,000 linear feet of wharf space for the handling of cargoes such as forest and paper products, heavy lifts, steel, bagged goods, and other general cargo.
Storage capacity for in-transit goods includes 525,000 sq. ft. of covered transit sheds and 50,000 sq. ft. of open shipside storage. 24-hour security is provided at the general cargo docks.
Nearly 50% of all American markets are accessible by barge through the Mississippi Inland Waterway System, making the Inland Rivers Marine Terminal, a cost-effective center to transport goods between barge and truck and barge and rail car. The Mississippi Inland Waterway System connects to 1.25 million square miles in 31 states and two Canadian provinces, an area which represents about 41% of the total land area in the lower 48 states.
Port of Lake Charles
In the Port of Lake Charles, P&O Ports operates as Lake Charles Stevedores, Inc., also known as LCSI. LCSI is the exclusive freight handler for the port. We offer terminal operations, stevedoring, log-yard and rail operations. The LCSI facilities feature specialized equipment as well as a switching engine for rail activities. Another subsidiary of P&O Ports in Lake Charles is Lake City Steamship Agency. Lake City Steamship Agency is the port's oldest and largest steamship agency and shares offices with Lake Charles Stevedores. P&O Ports provides a full staff of boarding agents and support personnel so that our customers always receive the highest quality services.
Port Overview
The Port of Lake Charles is located upriver from the Gulf of Mexico and is the 12th largest seaport in the U.S., 4th largest liner service seaport in the U.S. Gulf and a major West Gulf container load center. The facilities encompass 203 square miles in Calcasieu Parish and accommodates 5 million tons of cargo annually at its public facilities. The District owns and operates three marine terminals, the City Docks, Bulk Terminal No. 1 and the Industrial Canal, as well as 2 industrial parks. The channel has a project depth of 40 ft. and a bottom width of 400 ft. The Gulf Intracoastal Waterway intersects the Ship Channel, 12 miles south of the City Docks. Principal cargoes moving through the District's terminals are bagged rice, flour and other food products, paper products, plywood, petroleum coke and other petroleum products, woodchips, barite, and rutile.
P&O Ports Texas is one of the largest and most experienced stevedoring contractors and terminal operators in Texas. P&O Ports Texas provides stevedoring and terminal operations at the ports of Houston, Beaumont, Galveston, Freeport, Port Arthur and Corpus Christi.

Port of Beaumont

The channel is 400 ft. wide and maintained at a depth of 40 ft. with an air draft of 136 ft.
P&O Ports Texas provides the following at the Beaumont multi-purpose terminal:
The Port of Corpus Christi is mid-way along the Texas coast on the Gulf of Mexico (approximately 150 miles north of the United States/Mexico border). The Port's modern multi-purpose facilities are ideal for a variety of cargoes, and the warm, arid climate creates the perfect setting for year-round operations.
P&O Ports Texas operates in a joint venture, Dix-Fairway, in Corpus Christi and provides the following:

P&O Ports provides container and terminal operations in Freeport for the special requirements of Dole, Chiquita and Turbana.
The Port of Freeport facilities are located just three miles from the Gulf of Mexico via a 45 ft. deep channel. Berths in the upper harbor have a water depth of 36 ft., with a 70 ft. deep water berth available. The Port has a Gottwald 280 Mobile Crane with a lifting capacity rating of 110 tons, equipped with a 20 ft. and 40 ft. self correcting spreader.

In Galveston, P&O Ports operates at the container terminal at pier 10 and provides stevedoring and terminal services for the RoRo operation of Wallenius Wilhelmsen and at Pier 10 Container Terminal.
The Port of Galveston is located at the entrance to Galveston Bay, on the north side of Galveston Island with property and facilities on adjacent Pelican Island. The port facilities and terminals include both covered and open space, with 33,558 linear ft. of developed water frontage.

I started to gather those facts on Saturday - quickly came to the conclusion that this "deal" is just so much insider ball, and has no security ramifications. You've really done yeoman's work here and are to be thanked for it.

Here are some of the leading Container Operators that have bases at ports in the USA. (excluding DP World and P&O)
APM Terminals - Part of the AP Moller - Maersk Group with corporate headquarters in Copenhagen, Denmark. North American Global Terminals include: Baltimore, Charleston, Houston, Jacksonville, Los Angeles, Miami, New Orleans, Oakland, Port Elizabeth, Port Everglades, Portsmouth, Savannah, Tacoma
China Ocean Shipping (Group) Company (aka COSCO) - the national flag carrier of the People's Republic of China. Headquartered in Shanghai. USA Terminals include: Port Newark/Elizabeth Marine Complex, Baltimore, Charleston, Houston, Long Beach, Miami, New Orleans, Norfolk, Oakland, Savannah, Seattle.
APL - wholly owned subsidiary of Singapore-based Neptune Orient Lines. Services to North America include the ports of New York, Los Angeles, Seattle and the Pacific Northwest.
Hanjin - ports in United States include Boston, Charleston, Long Beach, New York, Norfolk, Oakland, Portland, Savannah, Seattle, Wilmington, Port Everglades/Miami.
Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) - wholly owned subsidiary of Orient Overseas (International) Limited (OOIL) based in Hong Kong. Dedicated terminals at Long Beach Container Terminal in California, Global Terminal in New York and New Jersey, Howland Hook in New York.
Evergreen Marine Com - Taiwan based. American ports include Baltimore, Boston, Charleston, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Portland, Savannah, Seattle. Officially opened a new state of the art Pierce County Container Terminal at the Port of Tacoma in Jan 2005.
Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) - based in Geneva Switzerland. US Ports include Boston, New York, Baltimore, Norfolk.
Mitsui OSK Lines - based in Tokyo Japan. Ports in the USA include New York, Baltimore, Charleston, Savannah, New Orleans, Los Angeles, Seattle.
NYK Line - Japanese based. Also includes Ceres Container Terminals, Nippon Container Terminals, NYK Terminals in North America, Yusen Terminals.
Grand Alliance - includes Hapag-Lloyd Container Line (HLCL), MISC Berhad, Nippon Ysen Kaisha and OOCL. Restructured their services following the phasing out of the Maersk-acquired P&O Nedlloyd vessels. Ports of service include: New York, Charleston, New Orleans, Houston, Miami, Seattle, Savannah
There was not one single US based company on the list of 23 Terminal Container Operators. Many of the companies do have US offices despite being based in a foreign country. So when you hear about an Arab takeover at our ports, you need to remind people that Japan, Switzerland and China already have their feet in the door.
