ABC cameraman Doug Vogt, injured with anchorman Bob Woodruff in an Iraqi roadside bombing on Jan. 29, has checked out of Bethesda Medical Center, ABC News said Thursday.
Vogt and his wife, Vivian, are on their way home to France, where he will undergo further treatment.
In a statement, ABC News President David Westin described the couple as being "in good spirits and looking forward to getting back to their children."
The more seriously hurt Woodruff, recovering from head wounds and other injuries at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., is being slowly brought out of sedation, Westin said.
"Despite the fact that he continues to be mildly sedated, Bob has been out of bed in a chair and his physical strength continues to impress his entire team," Westin said. "We've come some distance, but we still have a long way to go."
Westin added that "in another sign of Bob's moving along his path to recovery," his doctors have said that in the next few weeks he might move to facilities near his home in the New York area.
Charles Gibson and Diane Sawyer are currently subbing for Woodruff, co-anchor of ABC's "World News Tonight" with Elizabeth Vargas.
Sedation is a problem because???
Is Cheney going to get off the hook for shooting these guys?
Prayers go out for Woodruff and his family.
Hopefully some day they will explain to us why they wanted to film him with his head stuck outside the hatch of an armored area. My guess it was for the shot, but boy did they pay a price.
he'll be perfect as a Liberal newsreader.... he'll only have half a brain... I thought that was a prerequisite for becoming a news anchor.
Why did the station take Vargas off the air?
MILDLY sedated? What does that mean? Sounds to me that there's a strong possibility that he may have neurological deficits from the injury. It's not uncommon for head injury patients to become combative/agitated.
They didn't. Diane Sawyer has been co-anchoring with her. Charlie Gibson probably has as well, but I haven't seen him yet.
Prayers for Woodruff's recovery. I have a strong feeling he's going to have a rough road ahead.
Why is he able to continue to get treatment at a U.S. Military Naval Hospital?
That's a pretty damn cold thing to say.
nah... comparing fraternity pranks to beheading,
calling our troops invaders,
accusing men in the middle of combat to being murderers for killing a "wounded" soldier,
for preventing our targeting of minarets as sniper posts and mosques as resupply areas for "insurgents",but not giving a damn about our Marines getting smoked
for claiming that our troops are "targeting" civilians,
for getting an erection for every 100 KIA's and praying that the soldier's family curses Bush and the USA,
for the pathetic crying if one of there's (journalist) gets fragged or a boo-boo, but not bothering to mention the hundreds of horrendous wounds suffered and the honorable and extraordinary bravery that resulted or was a result of the wounds...
nope.... just sorry the other teleprompter readers (anchor whatevers) don't pull point on a little Iraqi patrol or maybe better to get the "real" scoop on a Marine rifle platoon going through the streets on foot.
bunch of limp wristed, sit down to take a leak wussies. If all media had half of their brains removed...it would make them smarter.
Good question.
I have to assume it is because military hospitals are best at treating these kinds of wounds - but I also must assume ABC is paying the U.S. govt full freight for the cost of this expensive treatment.
You shouldn't post when you've been drinking. I'm critical of the media, particularly those who sit safely in hotels rather than cover stories. Woodruff and his cameraman were not like that. They took risk to travel with the troops. They deserve the respect you give anyone who takes that kind of risk to perform his job.
You're a bitter little man, aren't you?
2 out of 3 wrong there, madam..
if ABC hired Tony Snow or Brit Hume to be their new anchor they would take over first place
but they'd rather be liberal and last
Well, I am glad he is recovering.
Thanks. I never watch and all I heard was Diane Sawyer and Charlie Gibson.
