Specifically, the glow comes from two main sources, the scientists say.
One source is a paired-star arrangement called a cataclysmic variable. These setups involve one regular star and a burned out shell of a star called a white dwarf. The dwarf pulls matter from the companion, and the gas heats up and releases X-rays.
The other source: active stellar coronas. These also involve a binary arrangement, in which one star stirs up the other's outer atmosphere, or corona, causing flares akin to those produced by our Sun.
The unseen stars have not all been counted in the new study, however.
"When they're close enough, we can look at them and see what they're like," explained Jean Swank, project scientist for the Rossi mission at Goddard. "And then you can see how many there are in a certain volume of the galaxy."
That data was then extrapolated

Wow.. that is really neat. You must be really proud it was a great (at least to me) mission. I am curious, did you work with David Grinspoon, the scientist who wrote
Venus Revealed?
Good book but he really seemed to admire how the Russians handled their space program vs. how we administered NASA. It went beyond just the fact they had the Venera landers.

Yeah it is but I didn't have any luck explaining it to my dog either.
And you blamed the dog?
While the Libs will whine forever that money spent on the military is a waste, we at least have freedom. The greatest scam ever perpetrated on the American taxpayer has been NASA.
Since going to the moon more than 35 years ago (which was worthwhile) it has spent billions, produced nothing and killed at least a dozen astronauts doing so.

"C'mon, you think those TRILLION$ of taxpayer dollars weren't a good investment? Why, in return we got ..."
and
the computer as we know it,
by implication, the internet
GPS,
all satellite communications (We'd still be flying film back from the olympics.)
the MRI came from NASA lunar imaging software.
cardiac pacemaker technology
infra-red thermometer
readers for the blind
And So many things in daily life you never think of.
PLUS Astronauts spend their paychecks on Earth.
The money is direct-deposited in banks here on Earth.
And the hundreds of thousands of workers in space-related industries buy homes and drive cars here on Earth and invest their 401Ks her on Earth.

PLUS Astronauts spend their paychecks on Earth.
And so do the employees of the Departments of Energy. In return we get ......... ? You're also assuming private enterprise and other scientists wouldn't have made any of those discoveries. Were Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, George Eastman, et al, on the dole?
Look, I know I'm never going to win an argument with space buffs, but just last year the NASA budget was over $16 billion dollars. Add up the money spent over the last 30-35 years and pretty soon we're talking real money. And again, what did we get in return? As a longtime taxpayer I'm sick of it .
