NEW YORK -- The Port Authority said Thursday it will file suit to block a Dubai-based firm from taking over operations at a Port Newark container terminal, saying the federal government has not given them assurances about security issues.

In other words the professionals with real knowledge, the people who bet their lives with their judgement.

I would be interested to know for sure where the union (bosses) stand with Dubai and whether they'll try dumping them after the sale goes through

The Longshoreman's Union is opposed to the sale. Which is why Fosell, King, Menendez, Clinton, and Schumer are opposed, because they've received campaign donations from the Longshoreman's Union.

Oh I'm thinking things through alright-

I see huge problems with this arrangement YEARS down the road.

Perhaps it is YOU who are not thinking this through.

It's funny how Tommy Franks and Bob Dole mysteriously appeared yesterday to lobby for the deal. I guess Madeline Albright, Tom Dachle and Jimmy Carter weren't getting the job done.

Dennis Hastert also wrote a letter to the president. This is an issue that has certainly crossed the aisle.

It's NOT a bad deal for us.

What do we get out of it; the way our bushbots are behaving one would think that they are going to assume our national debt?

This doesn't impact port security in the slightest. Of course I only base that opinion on thirty years of active duty in the U.S. Coast Guard, much directly involving port security, and my continued involvement with the maritime industry.

I doubt it. P&O is a massive company and this has already gone through so much regulatory scrutiny in the UK that the legal standpoint of the newly merged company is strong to hold existing contracts.

Any assignment of those contracts from P&O to another entity is apparently subject to approval by the US Government or we would not be having this discussion.

I don't know how much regulatory scrutiny you are talking about but apparently as recently as January 26, P&O was willing to reverse course on this deal and sell to Singapore's PSA.

P&O agrees to $6.4 bln bid by Singapore's PSA

I just can believe that any irrevocable regulatory scrutiny by the British government got done in the last three weeks. Stuff like that does not move that fast for a massive company.

To me, the most frightening thing to witness is how so many are actually trying to downplay the connection between Islam and terrorism as part of their argument. There is a certain mindset that this country ought to have post-9/11, and many are bending over backwards to return to a 9/10 state of mind to feel better about the ports issue.

The Longshoreman's Union is opposed to the sale

Why exactly are they against it??

I know it's not because of security .. liberals care about themselves way before they care about anything else

I see huge problems with this arrangement YEARS down the road.

So do I. Starting with the intervention of Congress. If they intervene, they will have stuck the taxpayers with the $6.8 Billion pricetag offered by P&O.

This Bush cult following is going to discredit the Republican Party - they will say or do anything in support of their false prophet in the WH.

It's irrational and bizarre personal attacks like this that make reasonable people leave threads like this.

If you Bush haters would stick to facts, you might get some traction around here. But when you insist on dealing in the netherworld of insanity, you make yourself nothing but a laughingstock.

Get your act together, ARCADIA, and discuss the issues, and stop indulging in emotionally charged bile like this.

You mean the people who are in charge of people that bet their lives with their judgment, don't you?

Beats the hell out of me why they're against it. In fact, they'll be working for this new company as though it were the previous company. Their jobs are secured at these ports. But I do think they're doing it for grandstanding purposes, just like these goofy democrats whipping up frenzied hysteria.

"Why did the UAE support Bin Laden and the Taliban in the first place? And why did it take them almost 2 weeks after 9/11 to sever their relationship with that terrorist regime? And why won't they recognize Israel?"

Because they all worship the same hateful koran. It's amazing to me to see so many FReepers suddenly, inexplicably begin to defend "moderate" islam. A week ago no such thing existed in their minds. This whole thing is a real coup for islam in general, they have discovered another chink in our armor..... it's called 'blind allegiance' to Bush. Maybe next week the President will hire an islamic security agency to work or southern borders, fully bonded, of course.

Sorry.......after your last post, you have taken yourself off the list of the rational.

And just for the record, I originally opposed this deal entirely, and now, as facts are revealed am moving slightly towards it.

Your ugly personal attacks, however, negate anything further your might say on the issue.

"You mean the people who are in charge of people that bet their lives with their judgment, don't you?"

Nope, I meant exactly what I said, professionals who'se own lives rest on that judgement...as opposed to people with no real knowledge but a political agenda.

This argument that "this doesn't affect port security in the slightest" is not concrete.

So it doesn't affect those who provide the security, however ponder this example...if a terrorist with the intent of destruction moves to Newark, it doesn't affect how the Newark Police operate, but it does increase the chance of destruction in Newark. The police still have to catch the terrorist. The probability of destruction increases.

If they've become so progressive after 9/11, why doesn't the UAE recognize Israel's right to exist?

I notice no one is complaining about China running ports out West.

They should be thrown out as well with air and seaport operations left entirely to Americans.

Timothy McVeigh was a homegrown, all-American kid.

Yes we do have lots of homegrown lowlifes but I fail to see how that could justify the possibility of importng more. We're kidding ourselves if we believe terrorists won't eventually find themselves into port operations in some capacity.
