Student under fire for shout: 'Remember Chappaquiddick!'

A community college student in Massachusetts faces possible disciplinary action for shouting "Remember Chappaquiddick!" during an on-campus speech by Democrat Sen. Edward Kennedy.

Paul Trost, 20, a student at Massasoit Community College in Brockton, Mass., says he was upset by an introduction of Kennedy given by Rep. Stephen Lynch, D-Mass., in which the congressman noted how the long-time senator overcame hardship in life on his way to success.

"Lynch said Kennedy had overcome such adversity to get to the place he was, and that's a bunch of bull," Trost said of the introduction, which occurred in the school's student center Tuesday morning.

Just as Kennedy began speaking, Trost was walking out of the room when he shouted, "Remember Chappaquiddick!"

"Most of the crowd gasped," Trost said. "Then I walked out of the student center."

The student says a campus police officer went outside and stopped him. He also saw some state troopers go outside, the type who accompany Kennedy around the state to provide security.

Trost says the cop took down his information and told him he would be hearing from school officials about disciplinary action. A spokesman with the campus police verified the incident but stressed that Trost was not arrested.

The student said one of his teachers confronted him after a class about the Chappaquiddick issue.

"One of my teachers called me ignorant and told me this was an embarrassment to the school," Trost told WND. "She said to me, 'Can't you forgive him after all these years?' And I said, 'No, he killed somebody.'

"If it had been me or any other person, we'd be in jail," Trost says he told his instructor.

Referring to his two-word shout, Trost said, "I did it because I know about Kennedy's past. I know what happened at Chappaquiddick.

"I wanted to send a message to him that my generation still knows about it. We haven't forgotten about it."

Trost said he was satisfied to know that students on campus were talking about the Chappaquiddick incident later in the day – some of whom, in fact, were not familiar with it.

In 1969, Kennedy was driving a car that went off a bridge on Chappaquiddick Island, off the coast of Martha's Vineyard, Mass. His passenger, Mary Jo Kopechne, was killed after the car landed upside down in the water. No autopsy was ever performed to determine her exact cause of death.

At the time, Kennedy claimed he tried several times to swim down to reach Kopechne to no avail. He came under fire for not reporting the incident to authorities until the next morning. In the interim he reportedly made an effort to call a family legal adviser.

"I haven't yet found out what's going to happen to me," Trost said, referring to the warning from campus police.

"Remember Chappaquiddick!"

Kennedy survived Chappaquiddick politically in large measure due to the fact his two older brothers had died tragically at the hand of assassins ... Robert in June 1968 and JFK in November 1963. The Chappaquiddick incident occurred July 1969, people, particularly in MA, tended to be in a forgiving mood as the death of Ted's two older brothers were fresh in people's minds. However, and rightfully so, Kennedy has to live with the legacy of essentially killing a young women thru irresponsible and negligent behavior ...

A few days ago, the Washington State Democratic Party chairman compared Cheney's behavior after the shooting with Kennedy's at Chappaquiddick, saying that both men behaved the same. What a lying SOB, and of course the Seattle P.I. let his comments go unchallenged.

If this had been a liberal protestor nothing would have happened to him and the college would have chalked it up to free speech. Liberals are all about double standards.

How ironic that campus activism started out as a "Free Speech" movement at Berkeley in the early 60's. The Left doesn't want free speech, they want control.

"What a slap in the face of all Americans that this criminal gets to sit in the Senate Judiciary Committee and pass judgment on such decent, honorable people like Condoleeza Rice, John Roberts, Sam Alito, etc. What an absolute disgrace. The man has no shame whatsoever!"

Yes, for years I've been sickened during many confirmation hearings as Kennedy has talked down to and preached to men who are his moral and intellectual superiors.

I'm not sure if it was the death of his two brothers that kept Chappaquiddick out of the news as much as the Apollo 11 moon landing that occurred around the same time as the accident.

They asked Senator Kennedy if he would run for the Presidency in 2008. He replied: "err, aaaagh...I'll drive off that bridge when I come to it!"

Ted Kennedy has long been banking on the fact that the years would erase the truth.

I see some light finally being shone on many of the distortions and coverups from the left. Taping these elitist profs during class, non-indoctrination websites, strong College Republican Clubs on campus, and a now a shout-out to Kennedy. Awesome!

Not only did Kennedy not report the accident...
Two fishermen discovered the upside down car next to the bridge that morning, while Kennedy was still feverishly working on his alibi.

So many people---especially journalists---keep telling us that Kennedy reported the accident eventually. He didn't. Someone else found the car and reported the accident.

That SOB swam across the channel (or whatever)

If you've ever been to Chappaquidick and to Dyke's Pond Bridge you will be amazed. Swiimming across the "channel" to MARTH'A VINEYARD would have taken some time (normally it's a ferry ride, the one seen in Jaws) and some effort.

Conversely, the car would have been right off the very short bridge and could have easily been reached by even a poor swimmer.

Kudos to this kid! I can't believe they sent the cops after him and threatened to discipline him. What about all the foulmouthed students who heckle conservative speakers, and nothing is done? What about the filthy lesbian Vagina Momologues being enacted on campuses everywhere?

Is free speech a right exclusively assigned to the Left?

As I remember, phone records indicated a large number of phone calls from the place where Kennedy was staying after he got back there that night after the accident.

If he could make those phone calls, why couldn't one of them been to the police about the accident?
