Don't forget the move afoot in Wisconsin to criminalize the criticism of Darwinian evolution.

Lawrence Summers is a special case in the free-speech battle. Although he asked a question the feminazis don't want ask, the fact is he was very stupid and Harvard is in the hands of very evil people.
That's always a bad combination.

We generally do not prosecute people who claim the earth is flat. We dont even allow ourselves to feel offended by them. We ignore them because we prefer their own stupidity to indict them. Common-sense bump.

Long, old story -- where and how to draw the line against nut-heads.
Given that political opponents are an easy target for any thug who knows the right doctor (like the ADA, a modern-day professional association of thugs), I think it's best to let the kooks roam free...

"Irving may be an ugly poster child for freedom, but his case certainly should be a warning to us all."
Amen. This is an excellent article, thanks for posting it.

Long, old story -- where and how to draw the line against nut-heads. In the US, I wish we'd just quit giving them tenure.

What can you say here that would get you banned? Any good examples?

*shrugs*
I don't think the government has any right to restrict speech in any fashion whatsoever, save to restrict the dissemination of classified data.
otoh, freedom to speak does not equate to a freedom to demand and compel a venue or an audience. If an idea is rubbish, the public and any private concern should be unquestionably allowed to treat it as rubbish and spurn it.

Very good article, with exactly the points that tick through my head (and many other people's too, I'm sure) when anyone's freedom of speech is stepped on. Irving's views are repulsive, however, he should be free to express them.

It's more like don't offend the pet posters like sheltonmac did on a different thread.

Great quote from the article:
"Freedom means learning to deal with being offended."

I don't think the government has any right to restrict speech in any fashion whatsoever, save to restrict the dissemination of classified data. Even this should require a concise amendment... the National Security Act and executive powers are so broad there is a large number of potential avenues of abuse...
