It is assumed that most organisms have sex because the resulting genetic recombination allows Darwinian selection to work better. It is now shown that in water fleas, recombination does lead to fewer deleterious mutations.

Here's a question that's been discussed here before. This work with the water flea, Daphnia that one reason for the development of sex is that recombination leads to fewer deleterious mutations. Science requires membership, but I'll be glad to dig through the paper for answers for serious questions.

I would think artificial insemination is a little tough for water fleas.

Procreation disguised as debilitating passion and awkward want....at least that's how it looks now from almost 50.
And fidelity is not man's natural state.....one of God's inside jokes..lol

Only on FR can we show live sex (sort of).
Might be a little more civil than some of the recent political stuff.

Oh, so that's why I have sex ... because I want Darwinian selection to work better. /s

You mean "third or further down best?" A good snifter of an old (50-70 years or better) cognac, with a lemon slice on the side, surpasses it greatly.

The crux of the experiments (S. Paland, M. Lynch Science 311:990) "is that selected mutations tend to interfere with each other in the absence of recombination. Imagine a beneficial mutation A arising in one individual and another beneficial mutation B arising in another individual that does not carry A. In the absence of recombination, mutation B would be eliminated when A reaches a frequency of 100%"
Daphnia is ideal for these studies because they be propagated both sexually and parthenogenetically.

That might work as a pickup line, if the woman were drunk enough. I guess the man would have to be pretty inebriated as well to try it.

And how much did this study cost the taxpayers??????
