Frontpage Interview’s guest today is Edward Alexander, professor emeritus of English, University of Washington. He is the author of many books, including The Resonance of Dust: Essays on Holocaust Literature and Jewish, The Jewish Wars: Reflections By One of the Belligerents, and Classical Liberalism and the Jewish Tradition. He is the co-editor (with Paul Bogdanor) of the new book The Jewish Divide Over Israel: Accusers and Defenders.
FP: Edward Alexander, welcome to Frontpage Interview.
Alexander: Thanks. I'm glad to be here.
FP: Why is it that you think that large numbers of Jews have turned against the Jewish state? When exactly did this start happening? What are their true motives?
Alexander: A large proportion of Jewish intellectuals, even more than ordinary Jews, have long assumed that Judaism and liberalism are the same thing, or that Judaism follows an arrow-straight course from Sinai to liberal and left politics, in this country to the left wing of the Democratic Party. So long as the existence of the state of Israel seemed to harmonize with liberal ideals, especially in the years after the Holocaust, it could be actively supported or at least tacitly accepted by most Jewish liberals. But the June 1967 war changed all this, and with remarkable speed. For now Jewish intellectuals were required to choose between liberal pieties and defense of the beleaguered Jewish state.

Disturbed is right! Shahak's head was so thick, even surviving the holocaust didn't teach him anything. Like Chomsky he was mostly a leftist instead of mostly Jewish.
The American left has many like that.
Not only is it scriptural but it's human nature to disregard gifts which you are born with or are given freely.

I believe this is true. And sadly true at that. Too many American Jews are leftist first and Jewish a distant second if at all.

Why pick on Jews?
One could easily make a similar point: that too many people are leftist first and Christians or even Americans a distant second if at all.
Emanuele Ottolenghi, while berating these Jewish individuals who attack Israel, wrote recently that they were few in number and had been totally rejected by the vast majority of Jews. He went on to say that having been rejected by Jews their venom has become even more poisonous.
Every nation, every people, has its traitors. The Jewish people is no different to any other in that.

And it doesn't take any kind of genius to see that the people who would make those kind of comments while their own house is in far worse disorder really have very little genuine, if any, interest either in Israel or the Jewish people.
The Jews who hate Israel are few in number and mostly scorned by other Jews. On the other hand, the many millions of gentiles, most particularly in Europe, who hate both Jews and Israel are an extremely grave threat.
Put it another way, there were Jews who betrayed other Jews during the Holocaust. Yes, virtually all of them were acting under the most terrible duress, but the fact remains that they were traitors all the same. They did not carry out the Holocaust though. Those responsible were the Nazis and the nations of occupied Europe which collaborated wholesale with them. In other words, the Holocaust would have occurred in any event. Similarly, if Israel is ever destroyed, those reponsible will not be the few Jews in question, but the Islamofascists and their countless gentile cheerleaders in Europe and elsewhere.
Like the article author, huh? I am sure you will be writing him a letter and please be sure to write the same letter to the professor interviewed.
Also, in addition to the fact that this article is about Jews who hate Israel (did you miss that part?) it is more profound to most genuises that there are any Jews who hate Israel -- the very land of and for the Jews. It is important but less shocking to many when persons of other faiths and nationalities hate Israel. It is a subtle but crucial point.
You also are at odds with the author and the professor interviewed in the article -- both of who claim that "large" numbers of Jews hate Israel. Did you actually read the article, because you really should. If you read it and have better information and statistics, please contact the article author and interviewee and demand corrections.
Anarchists of all stripes & all groups know they cannot destroy the authorities they oppose by simply protesting in the streets or confronting them directly. Thus they can only pervert authorities, empowering them in doing & mandating laws that are opposite to good. Thus the world is upside down, and people are made for churches & shabbat & governments instead of governments made for churches for shabbat & for people.
The antisemitic jew using his "jewishness" authority as a podium is one of the most typical & vocal of these, although I know many corrupt left & right wing preachers who do about the same hypocriticaly too, or more tacitly.
