Finally, a voice of reason and not a hate-all-of-islam reaction. The UAE won't be in charge of security at the ports. UAE is a close ally of the U.S. and is very western. To blame them in any way for 9/11 is like blaming the U.K. for Richard Reed, the shoe bomber. Or we should blame America because that's where Padilla, the dirty bomber comes from. Someone will likely blame UAE for funding terrorists through their banking system. If that is the case, Switzerland needs blame as well as U.S. banks for doing what they do - efficiently handling money for customers. The main reason I think Bush is right on this is because it is the Democrats howling the loudest on this. They have been consistently negligent on security issues, and now they have again shown a double standard. People really need to look at the details instead of trying to piss off one of the few, needed allies we have in the region.

It appears to be the closest thing to a possible concession Bush may go with on this one. In 45 days there maybe something that even the administration hasn't seen that crops up from congress? After all, they are good at throwing mud and seeing what sticks.

With the euro now competing with the U.S. dollar as the preferred currency for international trade, the last thing the U.S. wants to do is provide them with any kind of incentive to start pricing their commodities (primarily oil, in the case of the Middle East) in something other than dollars.

I don't think that is a serious concern. The European economies are practically on life support compared to ours and the arabs are intelligent enough to know that the Euro is simply not a strong long-term bet.

I'm about to lose my faith in Rush....Rush has been moving over toward the dark side for the better part of a year and a half.

I'm generally supportive of President Bush, but he's dead wrong about this. No foreign entities should have control of American ports, period.

Between this and Bush's woeful mishandling of illegal immigration, I sometimes wonder what's going on inside of his head.

It's extremely odd that Bush is picking this issue to fight on, and threatening a veto.

No it isn't odd.

If you've been paying attention this fits his WOT beliefs to a tee.

President Bush chooses his words carefully. He has referred to the UAE company as one that "plays by the rules" and has had nothing (that I have seen) positive to say about the company they are replacing. There is more to this than we know. The President is too passionate about this for there not to be. The same level of passion he has reserved for the war on terror.

As for England being on our side in the WOT. If the British people had their way, England would be holding hands with France around the same campfire singing Kum Ba Ya.

I was pretty flabbergasted with Rush too. Its like I fell down the Rabbit hole and met Alice in Wonderland. I mean I've got GWB and Rush trying to tell me its a good idea to put UAE in charge of substantial portions of our ports.

Why didn't we put the japs in charge of our ports during WWII ? Hmmmmm.............

"Why didn't our government prepare an agreement for the U.K. to take the TERRORIST? BECAUSE THEY DIDN'T WANT THEM!"

To my knowledge, he is not a British citizen and they have no requirement to accept our garbage. Why didn't our government put the terrorist in jail in our own country? If we are that concerned about him, we'd keep him. You've got no point here.

The GOP owns the "tough on terrorism" issue. Lose that and we're cooked in 2008, (and maybe 2006 too.) I can't believe Rove approved this thing.

You are so right. This is a ladder to help the Dems(socialists) to climb back out of the whole they dug for themselves on national security. - Tom

You are exactly right.

I saw one talking head say it wasn't because Dubai is an Arab country, it was because it was a "staging area" for 9-11. Why? Because one or more of the hijackers passed through there at some point.

Ignoring the fact that Dubai is the regional transportation center, if being a "staging area" for 9-11 is the critera, then we ought to be engaged in a 24-7 embargo against Germany, the REAL staging area for the whole thing.

Has everyone forgotten that Hambug was Mohammad Atta's base of operations? Does anyone really think that we would be seeing this blood-in-the-water phenomenon if it were a German company that bought out P&O?

No, we have ignoramuses spouting absolute crap like "We're at WAR with them!"

With DUBAI? That's like being at war with Singapore. Anyone with the slightest knowledege of the reason knows that Dubai and the UAE, along with Oman and Bahrain are the most pro-western, forward looking, moderate counties in the region.

If we try to tar these countries with the Al-Qauda brush, we only wind up looking like a bunch of racist yahoos who can't tell friend from foe.

my only problem is that George is falling on a sword that will produce a pittance of goodwill from those he wishes to impress....i understand the "deal" of it all....tit for tat with the UAE for favors they do us....but this PC explaining lecturing us to be sweet to Muslims or be considered bigoted is the patrician dna he can't shake which rubs me foul

"The Strom Affair"

"Minutemen are Vigilantes"

"Yanking the CSA memorial to the dead plaque first day in Austin"

Me and W aren't on the same page culturally about everything.

He should pick his battles more wisely....he seems unfocused and a bit angry...who can blame him. The whithering fire from the left and MSM has to get old. I've not seen anything like this since Nixon.

We can only hope the excesses of our foes will deliver us.

Again, I would not trust the congress to do anything but throw mud, obviously with their next election in mind. As for the Dubya's insistance that this deal go through, I trust him more than any congress-critter.

"Seven years ago? Go back now."

Australia is an ally in the WOT, and they've had a travel warning for UAE, for some time now.

- We advise you to exercise a high degree of caution in the United Arab Emirates because of the high threat of terrorist attack.

- We continue to receive reports that terrorists are planning attacks against Western interests in the United Arab Emirates. Commercial and public areas frequented by foreigners are possible terrorist targets.
