Stand up for Denmark! Why are we not defending our ally? By Christopher Hitchens Posted Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2006, at 12:29 PM ET
Chirstopher is looking for folks to join him at the Danish Embassy
Put the case that we knew of a highly paranoid religious cult organization with a secretive leader. Now put the case that this cult, if criticized in the press, would take immediate revenge by kidnapping a child. Put the case that, if the secretive leader were also to be lampooned, two further children would be killed at random. Would the press be guilty of "self-censorship" if it declined to publish anything that would inflame the said cult? Well, yes it would be guilty, but very few people would insist on the full exertion of the First Amendment right. However, the consequences for the cult and its leader would be severe as well. All civilized people would regard it as hateful and dangerous, and steps would be taken to circumscribe its influence, and to ensure that no precedent was set.

I've been buying Aalborg Akavit to wash down my gravlax. Based on your suggestion, I'm getting some Danish Fontina tomorrow.
"Terrorism works. We've seen that. The EU has capitulated. They couldn't stand up to a cartoon."
No doubt about it: terrorism works. The American MSM has capitulated every bit as much as the EU.
At least with those spineless weasels it does. The average Joe and Jane may be another matter when they see it in their own lives.

Thanks. I like demonstrations as much as the next pajamahadeen (sp?), but think it would be more productive to bomb Saudi Arabia off the map. Then rub out Iran's mullahcracy. But I think we should let Assad stew in his own juices for a while, y'know, before someone drags him out and shoots him in the head.
That clueless, Jew-hating goober is going to get the shiv-probably from one of his father's former colleagues-it's just a question of when.
The Islamofascists have made attempts in the direction of overthrowing Baathism, but have been crushed up until now. The forced withdrawal from Lebanon cut off a source of cash, but had also been bleeding Syria dry in terms of young people fleeing to avoid compulsory national service. When the time comes, Syria's regime can count on help from, hmm, let's see... which neighboring countries... Iraq? No. Jordan? Doubtful. Lebanon? They're waiting for that party. Turkey? Not a chance. The most likely source of assistance is Israel, strange as that may sound today. ;')
And that ain't too likely.
Thanks.
"It was the arrogant Danish mullahs who patiently hawked those cartoons around the world (yes, don't worry, they are allowed to exhibit them as much as they like)"
A well made point. Similar to the concept that Muslims can and do kill hundreds of thousands of their bretheren without self-criticism. So the issue is really not the deed but the opportunity to attack the doer.
Instapundit has photos of the pro-Denmark gathering at the Danish Embassy convened by journalist Christopher Hitchens this afternoon. Looks like there was a great turnout.
Lovely photo spread over at Vital Perspective.
Blogger Greg Tinti was also there with camera and reports:
The mood of the event was unbelievably positive and all the signs and banners were nothing but respectful. People came to express their solidarity with Denmark and support free speech and that's exactly what they did. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and met some great people too.
Greg estimates there were about 200 people and a lot of media. A few of his photos:

Bill Kristol was there.
Wonkette's David Lat has more pics...and requisite snark.
