Hackett's research targeted Brown
Toledo Blade ^

Posted on 02/20/2006 8:26:59 PM PST by hipaatwo

Congressman and U.S. Senate candidate Sherrod Brown voted to cut intelligence funding more than a dozen times before the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, a record that Paul Hackett's campaign advisers called proof that Mr. Brown could not win in November.

A consultant hired by Mr. Hackett, Mr. Brown's onetime Democratic opponent for Senate, estimated the funding cuts would have totaled billions of dollars if enacted. None were. The consultant called Mr. Brown's votes on those proposals and a dozen more recent national security issues "toxic in today's political environment," according to campaign research documents obtained by The Blade.

Mr. Hackett quit the race last week, leaving Mr. Brown as the near-certain Democratic nominee against incumbent Republican Sen. Mike DeWine. But not before his campaign paid more than $5,000 to comb Mr. Brown's background for political weakness.

The research concluded it was unwise to attack Mr. Brown's career voting record in a Democratic primary, because he toed the party line faithfully. It also predicts Republican attacks on Mr. Brown this fall.

Looks like Hackett will not go quietly into the good night. Need popcorn, lots of popcorn.

Nope, he's a white guy. I knew his brother charlie brown. He used to be WV Attorney General, but they ran him outta town on a rail even before his first term was over.

I can't remember why though.

I remember Sherod Brown was on Hannity & Colmes once and he accused Alan Colmes of basically being a potted plant.

I wonder how one gets a copy of this research.

Sherrod Brown is a lot of things, few of them any good.

Hackett was on Hardball tonight dishing against his former allies and Brown.

But, Chrissy brought in Howard Fineman to do counterspin. Whatever happens in this process, Hackett will get an education.

Paul Hackett was on Chris Matthews' tonight. I couldn't stand to watch it or I would try to remember what he said. I do remember Matthews accusing him of smearing (my words, not his, that I can remember) Sherrod Brown. When Matthews starting spitting I had to hit the channel surf.

I'm absolutely shocked and appalled that a candidate would research an opponent's record. What could he have possibly been trying to do? Win an election, or something? </sarcasm>

Hardball: Did Hackett's Unsubstantiated Charges of W Drug Use Sink Candidacy?

I'm not sure I buy that argument, especially when Chrissy is such a partisan and will spin in the Democrats interest every time. If the top guys in the party want someone out its OK by him. The cocaine rumors about W have been around for years in a lot of places including FR. You could say Hackett was clumsy in the way he approached the W cocaine issue.

This is how a pro handled it:

Link

"..Then in early August, Senate Democratic leader Tom Daschle of South Dakota had breakfast with reporters and raised the issue of fairness, commenting that he thought the media was more respectful of Bush's "privacy and his lack of willingness to discuss his past than you might have been with others." Asked if he thought questions about Bush's youthful drug use were appropriate, Daschle said, "Sure, it's a legitimate question. The second question is if that person denies it, how many press people, how many investigators do you put on his tail to find out whether he's telling the truth?" Daschle later stated that he wasn't suggesting that the press should dig into possible Bush drug use, but only pointing out that some politicians seemed to get preferential treatment..."

The pro lets friendly reporters raise the question, gives it legitimacy by giving a veiled suggestion that they look into it, and then later denys he suggested what he absolutely did suggest.

Too bad someone in the press didn't look into Daschle's wife's lobbying & influence buying. But "some politicians seemed to get preferential treatment".

"some politicians seemed to get preferential treatment".

With a cluster! And in direct proportion to how well they are connected.

Looking at the pic of Sherrod Brown, I wonder if that line suffers from a little inbreeding.
