QUEENSLAND is not immune to the pressures which sparked the Cronulla riots in Sydney, with the Gold Coast and Logan the likely flash-points, a leading academic said yesterday.
Hurriyet Babacan, associate director at the Centre for Multicultural and Community Development at the University of the Sunshine Coast, will today host a symposium on how to respond to the riots. The conference, to be held at Griffith University, will be attended by representatives of nine universities and 30 religious groups, including a number of Muslim speakers.
Fifteen speakers would pose the questions: What led to the events in Cronulla and is it likely to happen in other places?
Dr Babacan said many of the factors which led to the Cronulla violence could be seen in other cities, including Brisbane.
"Many of the young kids in Cronulla were from the Middle East but were not newly arrived," Dr Babacan said. "They were second or third generation."
Violence was made more likely due to organised right-wing groups while relatively low population densities made migrant groups more visible. "As long as you have social exclusion you are going to have problems," he said.
Queensland is the most conservative state in Australia while WA is a close second. If the Muslims rioters try the tricks in QLD expect them to have kicked a giant iron plate.
A lot of Queenslanders will make Mark Steyn look like Berkeley student council president in comparison.
Throw the filthy fx out.....Australia was fine before they infested your (and many others) country.
I think Queensland was the only state where the cartoons were published and the muslims uttered hardly a word.
BTW, is South Australia conservative, moderate Labor (like NSW) or hard-left Labor (Tasmania or Victoria) leaning? I can't figure out which way it swings.
What led to the events in Cronulla and is it likely to happen in other places?
I would suggest that some large cartoons be hung at the university for the conference. The result of such will enable them to arrive at a solution. One that they would have formally thought themselves incapable. Kill or be Killed.
I haven't followed SA politics in years. In the Dunstan years they were regarded as being the most "progressive" state. Politics in SA seems to swing regularly from left to right - you have a conservative government for a few terms followed by a labor government for a few terms. There is an election coming up and the current ALP government will be returned. However, the ALP is struggling in Tasmania. As you have often noted, Australian politics generally is on the conservative side. I could't imagine someone like Paul Martin and his "feel-good liberalism" being elected in Australia. Note that none of the ALP leaders seem to have come out to rebuke Howard on his Muslim comments. I guess with 90% of the country supporting Howard's remarks, such a move would be poor politics.
Yes, if they had been raped, etc., they might not be so interested in piddling around wondering WHY it happened. Maybe they'd just as soon smack some Muzzie heads. No need to explore causes -- let's just call it Original Sin; chosing evil over good; chosing to bash instead of use your words; self-righteousness in the name of an (evil) religion. There are many names for it, a simple solution.
I've lived in SA my entire life. The reality is that since the Dunstan era there has really been very little difference between Labor & Liberal on a state level. I just asked a co-worker and their view is that we just move between conservative Labor governments and conservative Liberal governments.
What does race have to do with religious bigotry?
So, the solution is to use force of law to make this multicult mess more "inclusive".
The politically correct turn everything into a race argument. The fact is muslims are drawn from all races. The facts are that Aussies as a whole are tolerant people and it is highly offensive the way the politically correct keep branding them racists.
