The Australian Muslim community says it is being further alienated by comments made by Prime Minister John Howard regarding Muslim extremists.
This morning Mr Howard repeated remarks he originally made in an interview for a book due to be published later this month.
Mr Howard criticised a small section of the Muslim community for its views on jihad and attitudes to women.
"I stand by those comments that there is a small section of the Islamic population in Australia that, because of its remarks about jihad, remarks which indicate an extremist view, that is a problem," he said.
"It is not a problem that we have ever faced with other immigrant communities who become easily absorbed by Australia's mainstream.
"We want people, when they come to Australia, to adopt Australian ways."
Kuranda Seyit, from the Forum on Australian Islamic Relations, says for the broader community, the comments just reinforce negative stereotypes.
"Muslim Australians are by and large decent, hardworking and educated people," he said.
"[They] really have enriched the fabric of society and not the negative stereotype that we're seeing once again being portrayed, as people who are lacking to integrate and not being able to adapt to the Australian way of life."
Keysar Trad, from the Islamic Friendship Association, says there are sections in all communities that can be seen as extreme.
"To single out the Muslim community like this, the Prime Minister is unfortunately playing on pre-existing Islamaphobia," he said.
Muslims re-enforce Truths about their Religion everytime they act.
They sure are looking high and low for something to be offended about lately, aren't they?
Not that it's that hard for them to be offended, but it almost looks concerted.
i was just thinking, all anyone has to do is pay attention to the news to see how 'wrong' Howard is.
I could have sworn 9/11, international terrorism, and chopping blokes' heads off had something to do with it.
Silly me. I should have known it was all John Howard's fault!
Don't forget the rapes, the 30 Muslims belting into 1 Aussie etc.
That's asking too much from muslimes.
We (the West) are all wrong, we are all at fault.
We have failed in "understanding" Muslims, the Liberals say.
Always our fault.
Hey, Mr Seyit, YOU DONT GET IT! It's not the Prime Minister who's the problem for you 'moderate Muslims', it's your damn radicals that's the problem. AND none you guys seem to want to CRITICIZE them!
Hey Keysar...that's on you, you filthy lying piece of pig crap.
Hey, Mr Seyit, YOU DONT GET IT! It's not the Prime Minister who's the problem for you 'moderate Muslims', it's your damn radicals that's the problem. AND none OF you guys seem to want to CRITICIZE them!
. . . and beating up Aussie lifeguards, and burning McDonalds' in Pakistan, killing folks in riots in Afghanistan, Nigeria, Libya, . . . 'because' a Danish newspaper printed some cartoons.
I'm sick of hearing how great "normal" muslims are.
Let them demonstrate it themselves instead of relying on the rhetoric of world leaders.
Bingo!
A bloke can't remember EVERYTHING!!!!
"Mohammedans reinforcing negative stereotypes, Rest of World says."
If there really are any 'moderates' out there in the Koraniac Death Cult, they'd better whip the murdering, insane nutbags into shape REAL QUICK before they are visited by a reverse-holocaust.
And I'm only reporting what I'm seeing and hearing on the streets of America. People go on extra-heightened sense-alert on the streets when they see Mohammedans walking nearby.
i understand perfectly well. you? lol draw cartoons=no head. pretty simple.
the liberals can have them. actually they would probably get along great!
