President George W. Bush's job-approval ratings have fallen off slightly from January 2006, according to a recent Harris Interactive poll, while Congress's ratings have remained about the same.
Any benefit President Bush may have gained from his State of the Union speech didn't last long enough to be measured in the latest poll, as Mr. Bush's ratings are now 40% positive, down from a positive rating of 43% in January, and 58% negative, up from 56% negative.
Here are full results of the poll:
"How would you rate the overall job George W. Bush is doing as president -- excellent, pretty good, only fair, or poor?"
Base: All Adults; Respondents who said "Not Sure" were excluded

I'll take the support of those who identify themselves as Republicans to be a given, and the polls show the responses to be rather predictable when sorted according to party affiliation vs. political phylosophy...no surprises there.
The numbers in the Independent/Moderate groups are statistically identical under both classifications.
In light of these numbers, considering the dismal job approval rating of Congress (25%), and looking forward to the upcoming 2006 election, what do you believe that the White House should do in order to sway the Independent/Moderate voter to the GOP candidates?
Methodology: Harris Interactive conducted this online survey in the U.S., Feb. 3-7, 2006, among a nationwide cross section of 1,002 adults. Figures for age, gender, race/ethnicity, education, income and region were weighted where necessary to align with population proportions. Propensity score weighting was also used to adjust for respondents' propensity to be online. In theory, with probability samples of this size, one can say with 95% certainty that the overall results have a sampling error of =/- 3 percentage points of what they would be if the entire U.S. adult population had been polled with complete accuracy. This online sample is not a probability sample.
Is every poll that has Bush in the low 40s a fraudulent poll? That would mean 99% are wrong.
Unfortunately, I think his ratings have tanked again. Basically no bump from the State of the Union address. His ratings are basically a reflection of what the MSM are saying is going on in Iraq.
"only fair" is considered negative in this poll. I would like to see the breakdown between the four choices. I think a lot of conservatives would say "only fair" for a variety of reasons. calling "only fair" a negative is misleading-- it is more neutral than negative in my way of thinking.
Makes one wonder if Al Hunt is still responsible for the political polling questions and techniques at the WSJ.
So, they just "divined" the party affiliation and political phylosophy numbers?
So, in so many words
(no offense),
we are super busy picking "fly poop" out of pepper...
with no discernable results?
His chances in 2008 are looking pretty dim.
PLUS: Disaffection of the Conservative base with profligate spending, lack of border control, and making boneheaded decisions like nominating Miers, giving the port management business to an Arab company, etc. Not to mention letting the Dims beat him like a Pinata over Iraq while offering absolutely no defense to their grossly inaccurate statements (no WMD, etc.). IMO, this is good for at least 10 points in ANY poll.
Harris used to lean left, way back when. I can only assume that they have gotten worse, like all the rest.

Verrrry true. I'd only give Bush a fair rating (CFR, no vetoes, borders), but fair compared to what I'd rate a president Gore or Kerry is like a gold star.
Harris said Mondale was in hailing distance of Reagan and called Bush/Dukakis a "dead heat." He's a partisan Democratic hack.
I'd even believe that goofball Dick Morris over him.

Yes there wrong, Now you understand the meaning of propoganda
You're right, and the typical Freeper has consistently been unable to cope with this.
The administration's numbers affect the 2006 elections.
The numbers for the Republican-controlled Congress are even worse than the President's.
What do you think has to be done in order to sway the independent/moderate voters to vote for GOP candidates?
A start would be making a real effort on border control. It's hard to see that they are really concerned about terrorism when the borders are still porous as sponges nearly 5 years after 9/ll.
A bit more fiscal responsibility would also be a good thing. Yes, we do have the WOT, which was somewhat unforeseen, but what about asking Americans for some sacrifices (or to buy War Bonds or something) to help pay for it? This might also help more Americans feel "part" of the war effort.
My 2 cents worth...
Are poll numbers in the 40's a good thing?
This is a non scientific Internet poll.
