(hehe)
Seriously the last time I watched skiing was like 5 and the Wide world or sports was on... and then I was just watchin for Fanfare for the Common Man....
thanks for the info.
Oh well, it's good we got to see what he (and apparently his Mom) is all about. He must be proud now that he's won gold for the US (or maybe just himself), and then proceeds to act like a spoiled 5 yr old child on nat'l TV...outstanding.
Yeah...and that is the sad part about Olympics these days...they aren't there for their country...which is what it used to be about.....sigh
I am reminded of the Danica story at the Indy 500 last year.
Now I am a serious IRL fan, but I loved her gusto during the race. I enjoyed watching her- and the fans were off their feet yelling for her. I thought she brought something to the race last year- she didn't win and she is not that great of driver.
She did bring some new fans who knew *nothing* about racing - but she helped make the race fun in a new way.
So I give her kudos.
He was scheduled to team race....he decided at the last minute not to. He's a real prince.
The USA olympic team darn sure is representing this country!
I think that lots of the attitude problem comes from Mommy Dearest. Here I thought that only sixteen-year-old female gymnasts and figure skaters had stage moms; however, apparently, this is not the case...
However, it's a pity about Davis though. If it wasn't for the enormous chip on his shoulder, the world would be his oyster. He'd get the sappy fluff with the soundtrack theme instead of the whiny piece he got tonight, and advertisers would be knocking each other down to get him endorsement deals.
As for Chad, he came off a bit petulent as well tonight. His main strengths are the 1500 m, 5,000 m, and the 10,000 m, so it really shouldn't come as a surprise that Shani beat him. Even though he doesn't like the guy, he could at least act fake happy for him.
Frankly, right now, despite the fact that the U.S. is going to probably get the rest of the gold medals, the only person who looks really good from a PR standpoint is Joey Cheek. Giving his winnings to charity and challenging sponsors to do the same is incredibly awesome.
Great post...I agree with all points.
The best part other than Joey Cheek's charitable giving, is his good showing is a surprise...which make a feel good story even better.
Davis has a chip....but, in a sport that is all-white, he must have heard all of his life how he "didn't belong"...which makes for a wall to be built up to keep from getting hurt.
Perhaps this win....will help him let down the barrier a little...once he is accepted as a legit player in ice skating.
Did I miss something? Did he say this, or did Bryant Gumball?
No...I don't think he has said it...at least I haven't heard it...but, if Bryant Gumbel is saying it...you know he has heard that message for a long time.
So, if this is true, am I to understand that is somehow supposed to justify Shani making a martyr and complete idiot out of himself while representing our country?...I don't buy it.
Nope...and I hold him completely responsible for his actions..
What I posted was in no way meant to justify anything...just speculation on what might cause him to act so rude, nothing more.
And, if I come across as someone who feels that we have to "understand" people...in order to deal with them, I apologize...
He came off as a jackass. I've never seen less reaction from someone who won a gold medal. He looked like someone just told him his mother died. The least he could have done is smiled or shown some signs of being human.
"What did Davis say?"
He acted like a robot. No smile. No emotion. A flat voice. Standoffish answers to the "how does it feel to win a gold medal" type soft questions they always ask.
Not at all, I'm just trying to get an idea of what possibly could be going through the imbecile's head after an interview like that. Honestly, I'll be just as glad when the Olympics are over, I'm becoming more and more cynical with each new Olympics.
You know...I was kinda ticked at people like Tony Snow, and a couple of local talk show hosts, here in the Dallas area, that have just blasted the Olympics...
because I grew up just loving them...and I couldn't wait when every 4 years, I would sit glued to the TV, no matter what the sport.
My husband and I had just met the year the US Olympic Basketball team lost that game....that shocked the world.
I also remember when Americans were begged for donations for the athletes..because to keep their amateur status, they couldn't work in their sport...
But, now...they seem like spoiled brats some of them...and not just Davis...and they act like rock stars that should be catered to.
This could be the last for me....if it doesn't get better...and woe to the station that pays for the rights to the next Olympics..
Are they going to show the 1000m medal ceremony?
I'm guessing that Davis gives his version of the 68 black power salute.
No, maybe his favorite song, retitled the Shani Davis Family Anthem...."It had to be me"
