Sex Harassment Is Alleged By a Writer of 'Friends'

SACRAMENTO - Two years after going off the air, the hit television show "Friends," which became a touchstone for a generation of young adults trying to navigate life and love, may be about to set new legal boundaries for talk about sex in the workplace.

The California Supreme Court heard arguments yesterday in a lawsuit brought by a writing assistant fired from the program, Amaani Lyle, who contends that the profanity-riddled and sex-laden diatribes of "Friends" writers constituted sexual harassment.

The company that produced the show, Warner Brothers, claims that programs about sex and relationships require frank and freewheeling discussion of the subject matter. The company has also warned that allowing Ms. Lyle to proceed with her case could put a strait-jacket on writers and dilute the quality of what Americans see on movies and TV.

This writer's assistant has a lot to learn, yet that won't be possible because I doubt she'll ever work in this business again. In a writer's meeting, every idea is tossed around and I mean every idea, with several drafts written before the final shooting script. Even though most working in entertainment are liberal, show business is the most Un-PC business I know. This lawsuit is ridiculous.

I think discussion of this case, this story, and this thread constitute sexual harassment.

At what point will you ever consider alternative/contrary views as viable?
No matter.
You will never be put into any position of real authority.
And if, by some twist of fate, you find yourself there, one might hope you have the integrity to shout out loud your inability to handle the task.
Or one might logically conclude/expect you get "expended".

I saw a handful of episodes of 'Friends' and could never shake the feeling that it was just a cheap ripoff of 'Seinfeld'.

Like I said, I could only watch five minutes of "Friends" in my lifetime. That was more than enough.

All the sitcoms get to be the same. The last one I really watched was "Taxi" in the '70's.

I thought you had to proposition someone for it to consitute sexual harrassment.

Nope! Somebody just has to feel uncomfortable! So, if you've got a playboy calendar in your private office, and someone sees it from the hallway, you can be sued.

Another example is one of the reasons for content filtering software: A municiple fire department had to buy content filtering software for their firehouses, since the firemen were going to porn sites, and even though the FD didn't have any female fire fighters, they didn't want to take a chance, not after that one female ff in New York (I think) who felt uncomfortable because even though she had her own bedroom and locker room, some of the male ff had a playboy centerfold in his locker. And she won!

From this vanity thread I posted a few months ago you can see that I had 'Taxi' the #7 sitcom of all time.

Courteney Cox and Lisa Kudrow just WON'T leave ME alone, and ever since Brad left, Jennifer Aniston keeps calling and even comes knocking on my door all too often.

Yeah, I've had that same problem. You hate to take out that restraining order, but sometimes they leave you no choice...

Sail your ship, and comfort yourself that your friends will protect your lifestyle.
Meanwhile, I am watching you.
I do not trust you.
You have made it clear that I should not trust you.
You think my not trusting you, one who has already claimed to be dishonorable, is a thing of dishonor on my part.
Take the rag off your head, and take a walk in the real world.

Yes. I sat and compiled the list from memory.
By the way, that was a fun thread. As it went on, freepers mentioned plenty of great sitcoms I had forgotten about completely.

I think one can safely say that is absolutely impossible.

Yeah, the Peter Green fan! I remember you now! You're a Great American!

You may have forgotten some of the sitcoms, but your list has many on it. Looking at your list made me remember some of the ones I had forgotten.

They don't make'm like they used to, do they?
