In 711 Muslim armies crossed the Strait of Gibraltar. They took Spain by force and remained there until they were thrown out during the reconquista in 1492. Every year, in a tradition that goes back to the 16th century, Spanish villages still celebrate the liberation from the Moors (as the Muslims were locally called) during Moros y Cristianos festivals in which effigies of the prophet Muhammad the so-called la Mahoma are mocked, thrown out of windows, and burned.

Is that true? Is that when the Vikings started raiding? Or settled down? No, it is too early for 'when they settled down.' But that too was due to Christianity, was it not? I always wondered ...
It is??? Moors and Christians? haha, I never knew that.
Is that true? Is that when the Vikings started raiding?
Technically yes. The Hundred Years War between England and France also ended when Constantinople fell to the Turks. but in neither case were the eventrs related.
Frankly it's time to start playing Cowboys and Muslims.
> in neither case were the eventrs related
Not necessarily so. Charlemagne started attacking the Scandinavians under the Christian banner, and then out of the blue Scandinavians started attacking Christian facilities. Is it unreasonable to discern a link? You mess with someone, force them to convert at the point of a sword, sometimes they fight back.
> Is that true? Is that when the Vikings started raiding?
Officially the first Viking raid was on the Lindifarne monastery (in Britain) in 793. However, in 772 Charlemagne began trashing Norse/Teuonic shrines and forcing Saxons to convert.
That was Saxons, not Scandenavians
Virtually the same religion. When the Saxons did not convert just because a missionary told 'em to, Charlemagne put 'em to the sword and trashed their holy places. Many Saxons hightailed it to Scandinavia as a result. Also, Charlemagne was warring with the Danes at the time, and many Norwegians were on his side... but they turned against him when he intentionally targetted the Irminsul (in 772), an oak pillar of religious significance. (As the crucifix is the symbol of Christianity, the World Tree was likely the binding symbol of the old Saxon/Norse faith.)
Widukind was a Saxon leader in the fight agaisnt Charlemagne; when Charlemagne beat the Saxons in 777, he went to Denmark. He eventually converted to Christianity in 785, but that left quite a number of years for he and those who went with him, or just those who had also been driven towards Scandinavia due to Charlemagne, to tell the tales of what happens if you don't stand up for your beliefs. There is an aggressive alien religion coming at you from the South. They do not play well with others. They will convert you or kill you or live in a state of war with you. They will trash your holy places. What will you do?
Hmmmm... parallels, parallels...
...sautee him in lard.
I remember a comedian in the early 80's talking about the US army allowing women into combat to battle the USSR. He thought it was a great thing because if we lost we could always say." Oh sure, you beat a bunch of girls"
The picture of the muzzies knocking the ronald mcdonald statue over reminded me of this..." Oh sure you beat the crap out of a clown" I also love the fact that they believe that beating up a ronald mcdonald is equivalent to defiling an american religious idol.( hmm maybe it would be for some) that just amplified how 'dark ages" they are.
