Tory backbencher says he will kill gun registry

OTTAWA -- The Conservative government has created a committee of two cabinet ministers and a backbencher to figure out how best to kill the long-gun registry as soon as possible.
Registry critic Garry Breitkreuz, who is working with Justice Minister Vic Toews and Public Security Minister Stockwell Day, said he has been given wide leeway to deal swiftly with the registry.
"I wouldn't be fighting for what I'm fighting for if I didn't think that would be the case," the Saskatchewan MP said in an interview.
"We couldn't have had two better appointments because they're giving me the opportunities to put in place whatever is needed to stop the flow of money right now."
Prime Minister Stephen Harper promised voters during the election campaign that the long-gun registry would be scrapped and money redirected to public safety.
When the Liberals added the registry to the federal gun control program in 1995, they said it would cost taxpayers no more than $2 million. But the most recent estimates put the figure in the hundreds of millions of dollars, bringing the total cost of the gun program to more than $1 billion.
The Conservatives have called the registry a waste of taxpayers money that targets duck hunters rather than criminals.
Breitkreuz would say little about how the government will kill the registry while maintaining background checks it promised on would-be gun owners.
"I still have to work through Stockwell Day and Vic Toews so I can't tip my hand as to what we're doing but we're working on that."
The Tories promised to reinvest savings from scrapping the gun registry into hiring police and assisting victims of crime, but may find there is less cash available than meets the eye.
The gun program consumes about $90 million a year in direct costs while a single campaign promise to hire an additional 1,000 Mounties would add $50 million to the federal payroll.
There are no cost estimates on campaign promises such as defending victims' rights and improving gun safety.

Maybe those Canadians upset by this slight tentative step toward freedom could emigrate to New York City or Wash DC. The gun laws there are almost repressive enough for a liberal.

From what I understand, a lot of the police leadership in Canada is in favour of the gun registry. They were probably hired by Liberal administrators and are probably the ones misusing the funds. THey don't want their ice cream money taken away.

Oh, great! Now we're going to turn canadians loose with guns!!! The world must be coming to an end shortly.
Meanwhile...back here in the Texas Panhandle, just take a deep breath and get a concealed carry. Learn how to use the gun, and we'll all feel safer. And if you are one of the flaming liberals reading this...find out EXACTLY how hard it is to even get a concealed carry. Probably a lot harder than Teddy K. trying to get his driver's license...or swimming permit.
Those of us who DO know guns are VERY respectful of them. Not something you just play with.

The bureaucrats are in favor. More rubbish for them to comb through.

A backbencher cannot get anything done. That's why they are backbenchers.

You know - the more I hear about the guts these Canadians are showing since the election, the more respect I am gaining (and the more jealous I am becoming.
Let me explain - When the Republicans gained the majority in both houses, and then increased those majorities, I had high hopes of similar leftist-policy reversal.
I guess we all were set-up for that disappointment. I do find it interesting that our Canadian "brethren" are taking their country back from the liberals. Maybe it will be contagious and spread this way!

Wouldn't be surprised to see an "incident" occur that's designed to drive these mavericks back into the herd.

From my personal experience, that is the tradition of Canadian government. It can turn tighter circles than the U.S. government. With the election of a different party, there are typically dramatic changes to different laws. Things can and do change overnight and do swing back and forth with respect to whatever party is in charge. The downside is that if a leftist party comes into power, they can just as easily bring the gun registry back. The Canadian parliamentary system does not have the same check and balances built into the U.S. system. The Prime Minister of Canada is far more politically powerful in Canada than the President of the U.S. is in America.

Except cities like Toronto are sure to enact their own anti-gun legislation, being run by socialists.

I'd add that both a lazy, "unionized", "civil service mentality" attitude & unprincipled, kiss-ass, opportunistic political correctness - especially among those who reach the higher levels - are hardly uncommom among police up here.
As an example, shortly after the Conservatives were elected in Ontario in 1995 I ran into their then Transportation Minister Al Paladini at a Tory social function.
Since Paladini was - outside his elected role - likely the most well-known car dealer in the Province, I asked him how much longer Ontario would remain one of the only 3 or 4 jurisdictions in North America mandating front license plates on all vehicles?
He responded that, while he agreed they looked awful on the many, particularly high-end, cars not designed for them, with most police officers both usually voting Conservative & not wanting to be required to walk around to the back of cars to check plate numbers ...
True story.

Many US states require front-end license plates too...

"A backbencher cannot get anything done. That's why they are backbenchers."
Usually true unless, as is the case here, that backbencher is teamed with a couple of very high profile Cabinet Ministers>
And Stephen Harper is showing himself to be absolutely serious in this area by providing the vile Gun Registry's #1 critic with exactly that political clout.
"Except cities like Toronto are sure to enact their own anti-gun legislation, being run by socialists."
Tough to be any more plainly outside of any mere municipality's lawful jurisdiction.
Any such pronouncements/By-laws would have all the legal (moral?) impact of Toronto's past decision to declare itself a "nuclear free zone" which, as we all know, is the only thing that has so far kept "the mega-City of evil" absolutely free from WMD attacks ... snicker !!!

As far as I know, the number of states & provinces in all of North America which require front plates on cars can quite literally be counted on one hand.
Note most North American performance & luxury cars - like this Corvette - have front-end designs actually discouraging and/or allowing for front license plates only as an unsightly local ordinance complying afterthought.
With Corvettes, this design intent has been the case for somewhere around the past 3 decades.
