Hit Refresh? Why Bush may be thinking about replacing Cheney.

Hit Refresh? Why Bush may be thinking about replacing Cheney. Thursday, February 16, 2006 12:01 a.m. EST The Dick Cheney shooting incident will, in a way, go away. And, in a way, not--ever. Some things stick. Gerry Ford had physically stumbled only once or twice in public when he became, officially, The Stumbler. Mr. Ford's stumbles seemed to underscore a certain lack of sure-footedness in his early policies and other decisions. The same with Jimmy Carter and the Killer Rabbit.

He is amazing. But the reason he looks like the eighth wonder of the world is precisely because he stands almost alone in his profession. That ought not to be so, but seems it is.

The DOW at 18,000?

I'll never live long enough to see that day.

For speaking her mind.

You may be confused however, Peggy was not the one who shot a man.

She is, however, the one who said "Pull. Sorry, Harry. Pull."

Tasteless, not to mention in accurate, among other things.

Okay, okay. You guys have made your point! I hadn't read her in a spell. I won't waste my time.

I should have known that something was up when my key search for "Noonan Freeper Fan Club" crashed my MS Explorer.

Who would run the country if Cheney is replaced? What would George say? Would Cheney actually fire himself? Why would "the man" stick it to "the man"? When you are the man, you are the man.

Just a thought to incite some comments.

I firmly believe that the plan is for Cheney to retire for "health reasons" near the end of 2006.

In his place, Condi will be tapped for the VP slot, giving her visibility and experience and allowing her to run as an incumbent for the 2008 race.

If so, HIllary is toast.

Notice I make to claim that this is a good or bad thing, it is simply what I see happening.

I have a good record on such predictions, I will not be surprised in the least if this occurs.

Cheers,

Even bunnies took him on.

Good shooting Peggy! :)
This column, it's vintage Noonan. This is her strong suit, and she knows what she's talking about.

I have been more critical of Peggy Noonan than of anyone else, since alGore invented the internet. But that is only because,
"For everyone to whom much is given, of him shall much be required." -- Luke 12:48
And certainly much was given Peggy Noonan.

Hey, Chris. I'm reading all the flack against her, and then I come to your post. So I'm not crazy after all. Good.
Listen people. Peggy Noonan may be certifiably over the hill, beyond the Beltway and out of the Loop, but what she knows, she knows. Can't you tell, just by reading? Can't you tell?

Okay, let me say a couple of things that have more to do with Noonan than they have to do with the whole Cheney accident. First, I get a little worn out reading FR posters calling a veteran Republican speechwriter a whore or an addled brain simply because she isn't genuflecting at the altar of George W. Bush all the time. She was a loyal Reaganite during the Revolution and helped the Bush family in two campaigns, and I am deeply troubled at the willingness of Freepers to disregard her Republican past simply because she raises what she believes to be some mild criticisms of Bush's speaking style.

I am also deeply ashamed of the personal attacks against Noonan from some Freepers on this board. There is simply no call for that. She has supported President Bush in the past and continues to do so. There is nothing wrong with constructive criticism of the Administration. She is not a disingenous self-promoter like Chuck Hegel!

Noonan wants what is best for the country and the Administration. She is loyal to the Bush family, but that loyalty does not extend to slavish, unquestioning devotion to everything that George Bush says or does. Sometimes she is dead wrong, as in her analysis of George Bush's Second Inaugural. And we should criticize her rightly when she is wrong. In the case of Dick Cheney here, she is probably passing on some Bad Mojo from some of Bush's underlings within the Administration who have chafed at his influence. We'll all see how this plays out. The Tony Blankley column of today on the craven nature of the Washington Press Corps is instructive as to how and why this played out the way it did.

However, to attack Noonan personally and compare her to that bourbon-swilling gossip columnist who writes for the New York Times, Maureen Dowd, is to bring this board to a new low.

Be Seeing You,

Chris

I would by no means compare Peggy to Maureen Dowd. However, I do believe Peggy is trying to compete with Maureen Dowd for attention. I think she wants to be the Queen Doyenne of columnists, toppling Dowd from her pride of place. If Peggy can't have attention by working within an administration as a writer, she will seek attention outside of one, as she is now doing. Her ego and attention-seeking IMO has taken over her better judgment. It's too bad.

I just disagree. Peggy is a much better writer in so many ways than Dowd. Noonan doesn't need to use word tricks to try to hold the reader's interest to get her point across.

Jimmy and Ford were one-term presidents. Bush is well into his second and last term. Why change anything. This is a stupid article.

First of all, Condi absolutely, positively does NOT want to be president; she wants to be the FOOTBALL COMMISIONER!

Secondly, Condi has NEVER run for an elected office. She has no experience, whatsoever, in campaigning.

Thirdly, why remove her from a job she's good at, move her to one she doesn't want, and probably would be miserable doing?
