Hit Refresh? Why Bush may be thinking about replacing Cheney. Thursday, February 16, 2006 12:01 a.m. EST The Dick Cheney shooting incident will, in a way, go away. And, in a way, not--ever. Some things stick. Gerry Ford had physically stumbled only once or twice in public when he became, officially, The Stumbler. Mr. Ford's stumbles seemed to underscore a certain lack of sure-footedness in his early policies and other decisions. The same with Jimmy Carter and the Killer Rabbit.

I usually love your post; however, you are completely wrong about Peggy. She has spent the last five years tearing down President Bush; carping and caviling and trashing him to bits.

How can George Bush replace Dick Cheney?

We elected Dick Cheney. George Bush didn't. Dick Cheney doesn't work for him.

That last Buchanan thread wore me plumb out. I don't think I can stay awake for a Noonan on top of that.

By the way, it's good to hear your fiery voice again. The Tin Brigade is getting feeble these days or maybe it's me, I'm not sure which....

Yes, the Vice President was elected but he does work for the President. The President can't fire him exactly but he would simply tell him to resign and Cheney would.

That said, I just don't see it happening.

Peggy is way off base here. If some Republicans in the White House have mounted a whispering campaign to ditch the Vice President, it is they, not he, who should resign.

I don't think there are any Republicans in the WH feeding her this stuff. They've frozen her out, just like they've frozen out that putrid menagerie of degenerate jackals and hyenas that call themselves the White House press corps. And that just drives her (and them) crazy. Have you ever seen so much "reporting" that's based on "sources close to the White House..." or "a source who is familiar with a key memeber of the White House Office of ..."?

She sounds exactly like Dowd at this point. A bitter, angry woman. Should I had scorned? Was she scorned? I searched thru the WSJ and couldn't find her email addy. Anybody got it? I get so tired of firing of emails..... Reporter from the Washington Post said she's writing a story for Sunday, about Dana and his BS attire at the White House. We'll see if that really happens.

I doubt Bush wants to dump Cheney for Condi. If that happened, it would be the kiss of death to Condi. She would become the "incumbent," and that dog won't hunt in 2008. Plus, Bush really is not Machiavelli reincarnated via the Rasputin Rove. The guy is more of the shortest path from A to B is a straight line, type, even if the line crosses some booby traps.

And the ultimate point, is that if Bush were all about doing this, he would not pick a loose cannon such as Noonan to twist the knife. I thing Noonan is freelancing. Reading the tea leaves too closely can be bad for your vision. Keeping some distance, and reading in good light, is the ticket.

"His recounting of the decision on how to handle it in the press seemed to reflect only incompetence, not malevolence."

With the way Peggy Noonan is these days, she'll probably use the column to offer to have Dana's baby for wearing that hunting outfit.

Your snicker has been duly noted.

I'll admit that she ain't one of the folks I click to first. But I could not be convinced that her commentary is this far off on a regular basis.

I'm going to put a tiny little check next to her name, but I'll refrain from sweeping through the archives at Opinion Journal.

I think Peggy has partaken of the Kool-Aide. Which is unfortunate, considering her normally pithy commentary and overwhelming MILF-ishness.
