That's exactly what we did in the Navy. I HAD a full set of Navy/Marine/Sub Service recipe cards, but I think my ex took them....at least I was never able to find them..

This is the 1944 Navy Recipe for SOS: (serves 100)
Ingredients...............Weights..............Amounts
beef, dried sliced.........7lbs..............1 3/4 gallons
milk, liquid........................................5 gallons
fat, melted...............2lbs.....................1 quart
flour.....................2lbs....................2 1/2 quarts
pepper....................1/2 oz...................1 3/4 tbsp
bread, toasted......................................100 slices
Cut beef into small pieces. Heat milk to boiling. Blend together fat and flour to a smooth paste. Stir into milk. Cook, stirring constantly, untill thickened. Add pepper. Stir in beef. Let simmer for 10 minutes. Serve over toast.
