Molester coach sentenced to a year of work furlough

OAKLAND -- An Alameda County judge today sentenced a former high school girls basketball coach who molested three players to one year in a work furlough program in Los Angeles County.

Tanda Rucker, the 32-year-old daughter of former Berkeley City Manager Weldon Rucker, could have faced 14 years in state prison after pleading not contest in November to 18 felony counts of penetration with a foreign object and oral copulation with minors.

But Superior Court Judge Thomas Reardon opted to sentence her to 12 months at Cornell Corrections Institute in El Monte.

Rucker currently lives and works in Southern California, and the sentence will allow her to continue working at her job, court officials said.

Rucker's attorney, Elizabeth Grossman, has said in the past that the relationships were consensual.

The parents of the two Encinal students have filed civil lawsuits against Rucker, calling her a predator who pressured their daughters into lesbian affairs.

(Oakland, California) Former physical education teacher and girls basketball coach at Encinal High School, Tanda Rucker, 31, pleaded not guilty last Thursday to 26 felony counts of unlawful sex with teenage girls.

Explaining the 26 total felony charges, it's alleged that Rucker has had illegal sex with several young girls over the past decade, including a tryst with a 15-year-old girl in the summer of 1995. She was originally charged in March 2004, however, additional charges have been tacked on since one girl spilled her guts to Alameda police in a fit of lesbian jealousy.

Interestingly, Rucker was a standout basketball player at Berkeley High School, winning the state championship in 1991, and Stanford University, National Champions in 1992. She was known for her layups and high scoring.

Rucker is free on $680,000 bond and returns to court on June 8 for assignment of a trial date.
