I watched the press conference. The hospital spokesman was great. I hope McClellen was taking notes. He lectured to the press that if anyone asked the same question twice he would end the presser at that moment. lol Spokesman also made sure to say that Mr. Wittington is doing well and is in ICU only due to privacy and security. He aslo said Mr. Wittington didn't have a tv and had no idea why there was such interest in his story.

Thank you for never forgetting the Daschle pair. It obviously never happened according to the msm. It took someone putting two and two together to come up with that tidbit.

The man has privacy rights. I thought liberals believed it that stuff.

Yeah, well it's the media's RIGHT to have that private info. /sarcasm

Yes, indeed! Let's make sure we make that name stick.

"At a White House briefing today, Scott McClellan told the clerks in attendance that ...."

Oh, Linda Chavez is now weighing in with her 2 cents, which is that Cheney is playing into the media's "culture of secrecy" that they are always talking about. Thanks, Linda.

Alert! This story is apparently not playing well in the Heartland, because James Sasser is saying that this is not an important story.

Cheney to break silence on shooting

By Jeff Franks 19 minutes ago

Vice President Dick Cheney planned to break his silence on Wednesday over the shooting of a Texas lawyer in a hunting accident, and his victim was described as doing well a day after suffering a minor heart attack.

Doctors treating Harry Whittington, 78, said his heartbeat had returned to normal with the aid of medication received as part of his treatment at Christus Spohn Hospital in Corpus Christi.

Cheney sprayed Whittington with birdshot while hunting quail in Texas on Saturday, but has stayed silent on it except for brief statements from his office.

Cheney would be interviewed by Fox News at 2 p.m. Eastern time (1900 GMT), White House spokesman Scott McClellan said.

"It's an opportunity for the vice president to talk about the questions relating to this issue and also to talk about his concern for his friend Mr. Whittington," said McClellan, who was traveling with President George W. Bush in Columbus, Ohio.

Whittington's heart attack was caused by birdshot near his heart. He was still in the hospital's intensive care unit, to help protect his privacy, administrator Peter Banko told reporters.

"He's in stable condition ... He's sitting up in a chair, eating regular food, and he actually plans on doing some of his attorney work in his room today," Banko said.

"He's doing extremely well and we'll just continue monitoring him," he said.

Banko said Whittington was mystified by all the attention over the incident and dismissed it as "much ado about nothing."

Dr. David Blanchard, the hospital's emergency room chief, said the birdshot that had triggered Whittington's irregular heartbeat was not expected to move.

Whittington's health could have an impact on whether Cheney faces significant legal repercussions.

Local authorities have said so far that the shooting was simply an accident with no misconduct involved.

But if Whittington were to die, local district attorney Carlos Valdez said, there could be a more extensive investigation, including possibly a grand jury probe that might end up issuing criminal charges such as negligence or reckless behavior.

In a break from usual White House protocol, the shooting was not revealed until Sunday when ranch owner Katharine Armstrong reported it to the Corpus Christi Caller-Times.

The failure to disclose the accident touched off a political furor, as Democrats charged it represented excessive secrecy by Bush administration.

Before Cheney's interview plans were disclosed, Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, a Nevada Democrat, and California Rep. Nancy Pelosi (news, bio, voting record), the top-ranking Democrat in the House of Representatives, emerged from a breakfast meeting with Bush and Cheney to say the vice president needed to come forward.

"Open government demands that the vice president come clean with what happened," Pelosi said. "We have to break this habit of the administration, of closed government without the openness that is healthy to a democracy."

They said they did not tell Cheney personally that he should come forward.

REPUBLICANS CONCERNED

A number of Bush's fellow Republicans also have urged Cheney to come forward.

"I think Cheney operates in his own world and really doesn't care what the press and the public think about him because he's serving the president. But in this case, this strategy is beginning to damage the president," said a prominent Republican in Washington, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Cheney's office said on Tuesday he had spoken with Whittington by telephone and wished him well.

Whittington, a Republican stalwart, was struck by up to 200 pellets when Cheney, hunting on a south Texas ranch, reportedly whirled around to fire at a covey of quail and hit Whittington instead.

Whittington's doctors said he was expected to remain in the hospital for another six days.

They said it was unlikely they would try to remove the pellets because surgery could be more dangerous than leaving the pellets in.

Great! Nominate this man to be WH press secretary.

He aslo said Mr. Wittington didn't have a tv and had no idea why there was such interest in his story.

That inspires me to wonder: What if Mr. Whittington has a serious heart attack from being hounded by the media, once he's released from the hospital?

Can we then blame the media for that?

Yes. They said he is only in the intensive care area for security reasons, not that he requires the special care given there. He's expected to be in the hospital for another week. All we'll hear from the media five days from now is that he remains in intensive care.
