NYT: CHENEY FACES GRAND JURY INVESTIGATION IF MAN DIES... In Texas, Carlos Valdez, the district attorney in Kleberg County, said a fatality would immediately spur a new report from the local sheriff and, most likely, a grand jury investigation... MORE...
Sorry....no cable here in the back woods...
But, Cheney just said he was sorry. To a point.
I think, thats what folks were waiting to hear.
He owed that that to his country, NOT just his party...and not 4 days later.
It is very good, that he offered himself up.
I have more respect than I ever had.
Dick Cheney doesn't owe shit for an apology to anybody over this matter except to Whittington and his family. He can have a personal life you know.
More 'projection' reporting by the lamestream media.
I know .. we all need to be writing to these people so they know we think they're going off track.
IT'S STILL GOVT OF - BY - AND FOR THE PEOPLE.
The "people" need to get off the stick and get more involved.
What if Sadaam Nukes Manhattan tomorrow... will the NYT be reporting that...
Oh thats right he can't cause George W. Bush Did something about it....
I see we only print the hypothesis when it meets the liberal bias ..
Let me give you a Bill Clinton example. When Bill Clinton, uh, hung out with Monica, he did not owe the country an apology. His wife and daughter, yes. Monica, yes. Monica's family, maybe depending on circumstances. But once he went out in front of the country and lied to us directly, that changed the entire complexion because suddenly he had harmed every one of us by breaking trust with us as well. (I am not addressing the whole lying under oath/impeachment thing, only conscious lying/cheating part.)
The people of this country were in no way harmed by the Vice President accidentally shooting his friend. Not in the slightest. Therefore, the Vice President only owes an apology to the man and his family. Ok, and maybe Scott McClellen for being left out there to face the wolves. But other than that, he has no responsibility. We are curious of course. And it is newsworthy, but we have no moral right to an apology from him, so he is free to handle it as he sees fit.
NOW, I respect him for taking responsibility for the accident. He did so squarely and without flinching. He is obviously extremely upset by this. Shaken is how Hume described it and I believe he is correct.
But he owed the rest of us nothing. An explanation is appreciated, but it is not owed. And it is most certainly not owed before the real life, personal, morally required responsibilities are taken care of.
Finally, I respect your point and am glad you posted. But we still disagree.
I hope you have a wonderful evening. I'm sure we will eventually meet up on a thread were we agree on many things. But alas, this is not that thread! ; ).
In all fairness if a district attorney says Cheney could face an investigation, the press does have to report it. It is not the NYT doing the speculating.
"Actually if he dies, then Cheney will most likely be charged with negligent homicide. Anytime you accidentally kill someone and it is the result of your negligence, then you are guilty of negligent homicide."
Only if you 'are' negligent. Officially the local sheriff stated that Cheney was not negligent.
If true, our legal system is far worse than I thought.
It was unfortunate that Dick Cheney had to go and shoot a lawyer. Really.
He gets a lot of criticism for waiting several hours to tell the public about it.
I wonder how it would be if he were a Democrat, would he have spoken up any quicker?
This items looks at that possibility.

Actually, why is it any of the public's business to have a play-by-play of Mr. Cheney's life? I have no burning desire to know EVERY action of the President or Vice-President.
The local sheriff was notified ASAP...end of story.
(BTW, the clymers in the WH Press Corp can go _____ themselves)
dick cheney spreads so much horror,he would be better characterized with a name like 'Duck Chainey'
In this forum, we give extra points for coherence.
You don't get any.
This is getting really stupid, really fast. That fellow looks like he's on the mend. He should stay in the hospital until he's ready, instead getting out and mugging for cameras for his pal Cheney's benefit, but the NYT is once again full of poop just like a lot of other big media outlets.
Ah, the NYT wishes!
He's out and about and just fine!
Who wouldn't? = )
