Rice calls on leaders not to expel Russia from the G8

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice expressed apprehension about democratic reforms in Russia. According to her, as cited by AFP, some of the changes made by the Kremlin "are not headed in that direction."

Rice noted that modern Russia is a long way from the Soviet system, but, according to the Secretary of State, Washington is disturbed by Moscow's attempts to establish total control over NGOs, and also suspects that Moscow is using its gas exports as a tool to put political pressure on its neighbors.

In an interview for CBS, Condoleezza Rice warned against international sanctions against the government of Vladimir Putin. In the opinion of the US secretary of state, it would not be worthwhile to prevent Russia from hosting the forthcoming G8 summit.

"We can say that everything's bad in Russia and so let's return to the past and simply isolate this country from such organizations as the Council of Europe or the Big 8," said Rice. "Or we can continue to tell Russia of our desire to see them in these organizations, but we expect that their behavior will correspond with the values of these organizations."

Rice commented on the invitation to HAMAS leaders to Moscow, which Vladimir Putin recently made. According to Rice, the US is satisfied that negotiations between Russia and HAMAS will not damage to peace settlement within the present framework of the 'Four'.

On the whole, Rice emphasized that in spite of certain differences relations between the US and Russia are now at the best they have been in a rather long time.

"US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice expressed apprehension about democratic reforms in Russia."

*Sigh* It must be Freudian thing - The tone of the article is right, but the writer couldn't write the sentence properly. It isn't that Condi is apprehensive about democratic reforms, it's that existing ones are being rolled back, and planned ones are melting away.

So basically Condi is saying that there are no consequences for one's actions. Nice.

Actually, the article stated:
Gossekretar' SShA Kondoliza Rais vyrazila obespokoennost' xodom demokraticheskikh reform v Rossii.
Which probably could have been translated as:
Government Secretary of the US Condoleezza Rice expressed anxiousness about the pace of democratic reforms in Russia."
Which was a bit Freudian as well.

Well, the article showed Condi giving them a dirty look.

I'd rather get booted from the G8 than have to face that for long.

Yup, but as long as she maintains an "image" of being tough, a lot of people seem to be satisfied for some reason.
