Upstater here- we'll no doubt be sending a fleet of State plows, loaders and truck-mounted snowblowers down there to help dig out (just like always.)
That's always the problem when it snows in urban areas- where do you put it?
Don't they actually have heated trailers down there that melt the snow and let it run into the sewers?
I wonder, will the DEC stop them from dumping the salt-laden slush in the salt water of the harbor?
Good luck, and stay warm and safe!

In Manhattan's business districts, yes, they do. The DEC hasn't stopped the city from doing this in the recent past. They did stop direct dumping into the rivers. The sewer water might get treated before discharge.

apparently, there was some kind of microburst in manhattan just east into queens that sent the accumulations numbers there off the charts. western long island numbers are only coming in around 12-15.

A fervent prayer for your your wife's uncle. How old was he? Shovelling snow seems to cause many heart attacks and should be approached with extreme caution.

"apparently, there was some kind of microburst in manhattan..."

MICROBURST? Smacks of psuedo-science local-tv crapple-babble used to liven things up when "heavy storm" just doesn't get the advertising dollars sold anymore. These liberal media liars will do anything to hype up a storm when it just doesn't live up to the 48 hours of hype they build it up with.

Not even the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) is a reliable source for meteorological information anymore. In spite of the fact that AMERICANS pay for their freakin salaries, they are supporting the "climate-change" liberal conspiracy to ruin the U.S. economy and turn over national sovereignty to the eco-commies. So when they talk about "blizzard", sorry, gotta wonder who's PAYING THEM OFF.

The answer is clear.

The storm caught some New Yorkers by surprise

What? We were warned DAYS, almost a week, ahead of time. Everybody was making preparations for the storm.

"Are any Mohammedans offended or inconvenienced?"

They ought to be, because GOD obviously elected NOT to KILL all new-yorkers under a giant "MICROBURST" (also known as a "maxiburst"). Everyday that America retains it's position as the world's only hyperpower sends a clear message about in what esteem God holds us.

Wasn't there some humongous big blizzard in the 1880s -

That storm was probably a bad one also, but what makes things really bad isn't the amount of snow that falls but what the wind does to it. I've seen over two feet of snow before, the two feet isn't what impressed me, but the 10 foot or higher snow drifts out in the rural areas are what really impressed me as a kid.

Now days we got equipment to clean up the mess after a big storm but back in 1880's I'm sure it probably would of taken forever to clean up that mess.

It's cold in Alabama, it snowed for ten minutes yesterday, I thought we were doomed. But, I had bread and milk.

Did you run to the store to get your supplies before it started to snow.

Of course, it gave me an excuse to lay in another six pack of brew.

Hey, I've got a family to protect. A man can't be too careful.

And no, I didn't run, that's what women are for in Alabama.

;)

Glad to hear they got a handle on the smog problem. What I saw in the 1990s was pretty frightening.

Our snow blower chose yesterday morning to die. So two 50+ year-olds spent the afternoon shoveling – 200 feet of driveway x 14” of the white stuff. :)
