The U.S. Army is calling back retired soldiers and boosting the benefits of an officers program because of a projected officer shortage.

In order to stop the dwindling of active duty soldiers, the Army is calling more retirees back to service. After active duty service the Army can call a soldier back within the next 545 days if deemed necessary.

Hundreds of officers from the Individual Ready Reserve have been ordered to report back to base and ready for redeployment.

Col. Mark Patterson, chief of officer policy for the Army, called it being proactive.

The army offers enlisted folks and warrants all sorts of bonuses to stay in (up to $100,000 for some MOS's) - not much goes towards officers. I guess more than a few of them are voting with their feet.

If I wasn't getting married, I'd re-enlist in the military.

"But perpetual deployment sucks, man."

Yes it does, and the people in this country that have never worn a uniform don't seem to understand what those of us did that wore them. When are these people that have never worn a uniform going to figure out that the reason they can all have what they seem to think is good for them is because of the ones of us that wore uniforms. America has to take care of America and some of us do and others only think of themselves.

"You were on perpetual deployment, but didn't mind. Right?"

No I wasn't. Figure it out, WHEN are all these I don't want to be in the military going to figure it out that my Brothers and Sisters that are on these constant deployments are doing everthing for them. Between the two Gulf wars U. S. Air Force and U. S. Navy pilots were on their sixth and seventh tours over the No Fly Zone in Iraq. A Marine Lance Corporal that I know and worry about everyday is on his third combat tour in Iraq. Some others are one their fourth. You figure it out! I wouldn't like it either and the ones that are doing it are the BEST of the BEST. These people thatdo what they do for America are the Best of the Best and they need help. So understand that they aren't the problem, the ones that won't enlistare the problem. If you think I didn't didn't do anything, here it is I was active duty U. S. Air Force for seven and one half years, my son is in his fourteenth year U. S. Navy, My Father and my Uncle Mike were in WW2. I'm with our guys that are on perpetual deployment and I'm with them. Where is the rest of America.

It does. I remember lots of time away from my family.

What I can't understand is how come we can't afford an adequate Department of Defense, yet we spend more money each year subsidizing bastardy.

This is a very poor article by UPI. It's just a bad rip-off (albeit a credited rip-off) of a pretty good article in the Washington Post. The story should be here:

Army Offers Incentives to Try to Retain Officers

(And no, I don't often use the words "good article" and "Washington Post" in close proximity.)

The author of this UPI story is so badly informed that he's confused the length of time someone is in the IRR (which can be years) with the length of typical deployments to Iraq (545 days).

But perpetual deployment sucks, man.

I've been willing to deploy for about three years now. But a couple of parts of the ^%@^#$ Army personnel system are so ^%%#$-ed up that it hasn't happened yet, while other people have to go back for a second and third tour. I really get pissed about this.

When I read about the personnel system in other wars -- like during WWII -- I realize we're light years ahead today. But there's still a lot that could be done to make the system more fair and sane.

Not this old man. Although yeah, I'd go if they called. They just won't.

I'm with you. Why should the same people be called up for deployment over and over again, when there are millions of armchair soldiers reaping the benefits of the military sacrifice and doing nothing but feathering their own nests? It's time for the Kerry's kids to go, and the Bush kids, and the Kennedys. (On second thought, they might just be useless.) These young military folks will be a political force to be reckoned with in 20 years. One thing that service shows you is how to look through the Bull Sh*#.

So does, I suppose, having to suck hillary's ass.
I have been amazed at the number of "retired" majors and other officers who are now commentators on cable news shows.
clinton did his best to ruin the military, but, thankfully, was somewhat ineffective.
Bastard.

If I wasn't such an old fart, I'd enlist ! Any chance for a 59 year old getting on a patrol boat? Twin 50s are cool and an 81 mm mortar is nice too.

Reagan used the recession of the early 1980's to fill the ranks of the military Three words is the major cause of shortages in the enlisted ranks. End Troop Strengths. On the active duty forces CONGRESS still is running the military troop strengths they set for 1996. IOW if 75,000 young men tried to join most would be turned away due to limits congress has place on the number of allowed active duty personnel.

Just think IF congress had raised the numbers in the army by even 150,000 on 9/12/01 these guys would likely be at the end of their enlistment. You do not go to war and at the same time downsize the military. Congress, Bush, and Rummy do not understand that.

Poppy Bush/Cheney started us on a bad road that Clinton and GW Bush continued. That bad idea was calling up Army National Guards for foreign deployables as well as an ongoing draw on the branch reserves. They are doing this to keep from raising active duty end troop strengths. That has more to do with it than anything else. This same thing basically happened near the end of Carters term except that recruitment was not limited by congressional caps. I was active duty Navy 76-80. In early to mid 1980 when we were gearing up for possible war in Iran the Navy called retired senior lifers back in on a volunteer basis.
