Boy charged with felony for carrying sugar

BY JUSTINA WANG A 12-year-old Aurora boy who said he brought powdered sugar to school for a science project this week has been charged with a felony for possessing a look-alike drug, Aurora police have confirmed.

The sixth-grade student at Waldo Middle School was also suspended for two weeks from school after showing the bag of powdered sugar to his friends.

The boy, who is not being identified because he is a juvenile, said he brought the bag to school to ask his science teacher if he could run an experiment using sugar.

Two other boys asked if the bag contained cocaine after he showed it to them in the bathroom Wednesday morning, the boy's mother said.

He joked that it was cocaine, before telling them, "just kidding," she said.

Aurora police arrested the boy after a custodian at the school reported the boy's comments. The youngster was taken to the police station and detained, before being released to his parents that afternoon.

"This is getting ridiculous," said the boy's mother. "They treated my son like a criminal. .. . This is no way to treat a 12-year-old kid."

East Aurora School District officials declined to comment on the case, citing privacy issues.

The district issued a written statement, which said: "The dangers of illegal drugs and controlled substances are clear.

Could get probation "Look-alike drugs and substances can cause that same level of danger because staff and students are not equipped to differentiate between the two."

The school handbook states that students can be suspended or expelled for carrying a look-alike drug.

Penalties for juveniles are decided on a case-by-case basis, but if convicted, the sixth-grader could likely face up to five years' probation, said Jeffery Jefko, deputy director of Kane County juvenile court services.

Juveniles who have prior criminal records could also be placed in a residential treatment program if convicted, he said.

when I was a boy we used to kill each other playing army and cops and robbers.

Did you lure each boys other into public bathrooms with promises of cocaine?

"fake, it's play."

Wait, let me guess. You know it's fake because the student says it's fake. Got it. Inmates running the asylum.

"... the boy admitted that the day before the arrest, he told the classmate that he would be bringing crack cocaine to school, police said."

"His mother added that the boy was carrying the bag in his shoe at one point because he "thought it would be funny to play around."

"said Friday that possession of a look-alike substance could be charged as a felony ... The 12-year-old in this case was only charged with a misdemeanor, Aurora police confirmed Saturday."

it's sugar not cocaine, so it's fake, not real. that's the problem with you zero tolerance zealots, you suspend a girl with a midol pill used for menstruation, don't allow drug-snifing dogs in schools, and don't allow mandatory drug testing but when a boy is caught with sugar, you suspend him. And when it's time for the pregnant student to get an abortion, you drive her to the mill and demand a permission slip from the parent when she goes on a class trip.

How do you know it's sugar? I'm asking if you're going to take the student's word that it's sugar.

Go up to a bank teller with a fake gun, demand money, then say "just kidding".

If the relevant law in that case was against representing oneself as having a real gun, you might have a point. Can you show that there are such laws, or are you just flinging red herrings?

from the article, it's powdered sugar. zero tolerance policies are full of crap and don't help the students. It's all a publicity stunt. If you think it's ok then so be it. The education profession isn't what it used to be.

"from the article, it's powdered sugar."

Yep. They know that because they tested it at the police station.

But you don't want to do that. So I'm asking you for the third time, how would you know it's sugar? Are you saying that you would take the student's word?

and i'm telling you for the third time that after the substance was tested the administration shoudn't have acted so hysterically with it's idiotic zero tolerance policies. the student's word isn't the issue, the issue is the suspension for having sugar and "pretending" it was something else and as I said "for the 3rd time" i'm glad i lived in a generation where there weren't so many hysterical parents and teachers around where we had fun and play was play where we could own our play guns and shoot each other playing cops and robbers, army and cowboys and indians. Yes, back then we called them indians and weren't charged with a hate crime felony.

Once they found out it was sugar that should have been the end of it.

You are on the lunatic fringe on this subject. Are you a teacher or school principal in favor of these zero tolerance policies? and if you read the first 50 or so posts, you will see you are in the minority around here.

"Once they found out it was sugar that should have been the end of it."

The school has a policy against look-alike drugs. Students are not allowed to carry around plastic baggies containing a white powder and say it's cocaine and invite other students to go into the bathroom to try some.

That's a no-no. It's in the student handbook. It's no secret. It's a school rule to which every student is expected to adhere.

Now, if a student breaks that rule they get suspended for two weeks. Even if the substance turns out to be other than cocaine.

How was the school to know it was actually sugar, by the way? This makes four requests. What's your problem in answering a simple question? Is it too tough? Did I use some big words?

*If* that version of the story rather than the AP's is correct, disciplinary actions are in order.
