Boy charged with felony for carrying sugar
BY JUSTINA WANG A 12-year-old Aurora boy who said he brought powdered sugar to school for a science project this week has been charged with a felony for possessing a look-alike drug, Aurora police have confirmed.
The sixth-grade student at Waldo Middle School was also suspended for two weeks from school after showing the bag of powdered sugar to his friends.
The boy, who is not being identified because he is a juvenile, said he brought the bag to school to ask his science teacher if he could run an experiment using sugar.
Two other boys asked if the bag contained cocaine after he showed it to them in the bathroom Wednesday morning, the boy's mother said.
He joked that it was cocaine, before telling them, "just kidding," she said.
Aurora police arrested the boy after a custodian at the school reported the boy's comments. The youngster was taken to the police station and detained, before being released to his parents that afternoon.
"This is getting ridiculous," said the boy's mother. "They treated my son like a criminal. .. . This is no way to treat a 12-year-old kid."
East Aurora School District officials declined to comment on the case, citing privacy issues.
The district issued a written statement, which said: "The dangers of illegal drugs and controlled substances are clear.
Could get probation "Look-alike drugs and substances can cause that same level of danger because staff and students are not equipped to differentiate between the two."
The school handbook states that students can be suspended or expelled for carrying a look-alike drug.
Penalties for juveniles are decided on a case-by-case basis, but if convicted, the sixth-grader could likely face up to five years' probation, said Jeffery Jefko, deputy director of Kane County juvenile court services.
Juveniles who have prior criminal records could also be placed in a residential treatment program if convicted, he said.

This kid infringed on nobodies rights, he hurt nobody, including himself, how can anyone justify taking his natural rights away? Freedom is dead in this country. I'm thinking of voting democratic just to make the fall come sooner, then maybe we will still have 200 millions guns in circulation, enough to have a sucessfull revolution.

Sugar is a devil. I call it “kiddie cocaine.” If you’ve ever seen kids at a birthday party after they've had cake, you know what I’m talking about. Before cake is served, they're all getting along, playing nicely together. That cake is served, and all of a sudden you've got little boys hitting, punching, and fighting each other, and little girls off in a corner crying. I always say to my kids, “Sugar equals crying”. It's true for adults, and it's true for kids.
If you feel you can’t give up sugar because you crave it, it's really not your fault. Sugar is meant to be addictive. Sugar is one of the strongest drugs out there today that's legal.
But please know this…no matter what you have to go through when you first give up sugar, it’s all worth it.

I've got a kid in my class whose parents deliberately keep him off sugar because he gets higher than a kite. I just let them deal with that and I deal with him at school. I'm proud of him--he went up a whole grade level in reading last month.
That's great! Sounds like you are a good teacher. My parents both have dedicated their lives to teaching, too. I'm thinking of entering the family business, so to speak. I want to become a bit more mature before I do so, however.
Who the heck said I was "mature?" You haven't seen some of my posts then:). I teach first grade which has made me even more immature. I too come from a long line of teachers, though I'm the only one in my immediate family. We need more inspirational teachers, and I would love to see more male teachers too like myself. You will see many retire in the next 1-5 years so there will be even fewer.
The school administrators (most of them) around here are pretty good people. Our principal is a wonderful man. There are a couple out there in the district that I wonder about though.
I would have handled this a LOT differently. But as I've learned many a time as a teacher, sometimes you're darned if you do and darned if you don't.
I believe the cops would arrest me if I was on the street with a bag of powdered sugar saying it was cocaine.

Glad to see that ALL of us teachers are included in that statement. I'm glad there are many around here whom I respect. Yes, there's some bad ones, but there are good people too. How does one talk to a bag of crap??? Tell turdy jokes to it???:)
I do try not to make too many blanket statements. Some liberals do a good job of that already.
Aptly stated, though I think it could have been handled a little differently.
The custodian should simply have given it back to him and told him that drugs were no joking matter. That should have been the end of it.
