Live Thread for TV Coverage!
Some of you might get two pings until I get these things merged!
Possible spoiler alert...
I owe NBC an apology. They focused mostly on non-Americans in the men's Nordic combined - especially on the surprise winner from Germany. They interviewed him and....DRUMROLL...showed the medal ceremony with no Americans among the top 3! Did someone forget to hit the 'homer' button in the NBC truck? Is Dick Ebersol asleep? If he is, don't wake him - this was close to the old-school ABC way, i.e., the right way.
I only wish NBC would stop the ADD procedure of cutting from event to event - we aren't idiots and we CAN focus on one event from start to finish even if NBC can't. In this case, they pushed the medal ceremony to the very outro of the broadcast. Everything's on tape delay - they have no excuses.
Glad to see Dick Button back on a skating broadcast - he finally threw in the towel at ABC I guess since they won't have the Olympics for the foreseeable future. I think he's also had a health scare in the past year or so.
Did NBC deep-six the chirpy female (forget her name) that does women's skating? I heard the name Scott Hamilton but haven't seen him yet.
Of course, it wouldn't be an NBC Olympic broadcast without the umpteenth mention of Michelle Kwan. As another poster said before the games started, I can't wait to watch her not win again. She is injured, which is unfortunate, but still can't bring herself to answer a question directly - God knows Jeremy Schaap tried. It's either an attempt to fool herself or to hang onto her commercial viability but the Daily Kwan Drama - DKD (TM) - is already starting to grate. Her personal press officer, Christine Brennan, will have two weeks worth of fluff to offer in USA Today whether she competes or not.
Looking forward to Slutskaya's performances.
Thanks for doing this.
Figure Skating - Pairs, short program
My God, Dick Button is STILL going to do commentary for figure skating events............
I had better not say anymore about this :-)
Hi! Waving!
Thanks for the ping! I shall return in about an hour....
Made the mistake of laying down on the sofa to watch the opening ceremonies last night. Grrrrrr! Missed seeing the American team walk in, missed Pavarotti, and missed the final lighting of the flame.
I'm back!
Did they show the Russian pairs skaters yet?
Bump the bull.
ping
I enjoy watching the olympics but I wish figure skating could be put on another channel for those who care about it. Yawn, please make that go away. I miss events that I want to see when I turn off figure skating and come back too late.
After the first day, Germany is absolutely giddy that they have the most gold medals (2).
I'm sorry Michelle Kwan had to drop out, she's such a lovely skater, and has represented American skating so well for so long. Replacement Hughes is not pretty on the ice, not graceful nor elegant. While she can't help being unattractive, you'd think her coach would tell her to cool it with the arm pumping, and to shut her wide, gaping mouth everytime she lands a jump. Or at least do something with her hair....like wash it.
Other than that, it doesn't matter who the US fields. Even if the beautiful, talented Sasha Cohen doesn't follow precedent and choke, the Russsian Irina Slutskaya will win.
The US has won two more medals!
