If you are an American engineer whose job has been outsourced to India, China or Eastern Europe, where the cost of living and salaries are far below U.S. standards, or you are an engineer who has been forced to train as your replacement an Indian engineer imported on a H-1B or L-1 work visa, where do you go to find a new engineering job?

If you are smart enough to get an engineering job in the first place, you are smart enough to find employment doing something else. I am a professional pilot. There have been massive furloughs in the industry since 9/11. A majority of the guys I fly with in the Air National Guard have been furloughed. Most don't expect to ever be called back. So they found other careers. One opened a coffee stand...he now owns 3. Several became Realtors. One became a financial adviser. One became a lawyer. None of them are sitting around demanding to know who is going to give them a job. They are Americans. Resourceful and free to run their own lives. So they do. What a concept.

Economists refer to these millions of unemployed people as discouraged workers who have dropped out of the workforce. As they have given up searching for jobs, they are not considered to be in the workforce and, therefore, do not count as unemployed.

I keep hearing about these millions of such people, but for some reason I never seem to see thousands of them living in cardboard boxes alongside the highways where I live.

Our community has an unemployment rate of about 10% due to losing 900 jobs in 2003 from closure of Thomson Consumer Electronics. Dollar General will open a distribution plant this year. DG has been quite pleased with the recruiting and hiring of these former TCE employees. Community leaders aggressively went after another big employer to replace TCE and they landed DG and also a Walmart Distribution Center. Our small economy is now looking up.

You either go to other companies in your locality (or, in a place you're willing to move to) which have open engineering positions, or you start your own company, or you switch professions so that you no longer "are an engineer" (that's allowed, you know) and get a job doing something else.

Why? What other options do you imagine exist? Complain to/wait for the government to "do something"?
