Serbian nationalists condemn prophet cartoons

BELGRADE, Serbia-Montenegro – The ultranationalist Serbian Radical Party on Friday condemned the caricatures of Prophet Muhammad and urged media in Serbia to refrain from publishing them.

The Radicals called the caricatures “offensive” to followers of Islam. The party said the cartoons, first published in Denmark, have led to a “justified revolt by Muslims everywhere who nurture the deepest reverence for Prophet Muhammad, founder of their religion and tradition.”

The Radicals criticized the publication of the caricatures as “immoral” and appealed to Serbian media, which have so far reported on the worldwide controversy without publishing the drawings, to refrain from printing them.

“This immoral act attacks the very norms of respect for religion and religious feelings, and incites religious hatred and intolerance,” the statement said.

The Radicals’ statement was unusual since the party is more known for its extremist views.

Since the 1990s wars in Bosnia and Kosovo, where Serbs fought against Muslims, religious and ethnic tensions persist in Serbia. The Balkan republic, with a 7.5 million population, has about 300,000 Muslims, according to a 2002 census.

Bah; go ahead and publish them. It's not like there's much left in the way of Christian churches left to burn.

Aye. What's more offensive, ethnic cleansing or some cartoons that bear the likeness of Mohammed? If they think 12 visions of Mohammed were enough they'll have more visions of Mohammed soon enough.

I always said Clinton and Company supported the wrong side in the Balkan conflict.

The Serbs and Croats both know that the few muslims, the safer the Balkans.

Serbian cartoon draws criminal proceedings by picturing statesmen in a "degrading position" (1993)

On June 25, 1993, the Novi Sad District Court in the former Yugoslavia reached a verdict on instituting criminal proceedings against Dragoljub Zarkovic, the editor-in-chief of Vreme on charges of "publicly exposing statesmen in an offensive and degrading position." The cartoon, by Predrag (Corax) Koraksic, appeared in Vreme

At midnight EST I will be officially sick and tired of this story and will refrain from reading any article about it. Goodnight all, it's been great, don't forget to tip your waitress!

"The Radicals’ statement was unusual since the party is more known for its extremist views." The writer believes supporting the muzzie "revolt" in response is not an extremist view?

Phew, that's eons ago. Miloshevich hasn't been in power since 2000. Thanks for the link, though. I don't remember 1993 all that well now (I've spent the last 12 years trying to erase it from my memory).

Wasn't it those Serbs who got everyone into World War I, anyway? Archduke Ferdinand or something...?

If you're going to be pedantic, try reading this site.

Ferdinand was assassinated by a Serbian nationalist; this was widely considered to be the tipping point into WW I...

Full Disclosure: His wife's name was "Countess Sophia von Chotkowa und Wognin, Duchess of Hohenburg". There's gotta be a joke in there somewhere...
