Navy took Dome buses for family, panel told

Stranded residents of New Orleans weren't the only ones trying to get out of Dodge after the floodwaters began overtaking large sections of the city. A Louisiana National Guard official said that Navy officials, pretending to be contractors, appropriated buses that were on their way to the Superdome the Thursday after Hurricane Katrina struck. The buses were used to rescue family members of Navy personnel hunkered down at the Fairmont Hotel. "The bus would come up to the checkpoints, these people, who weren't supposed to be taking the buses, come up and say, 'You are coming with me,' Lt. Col Jacques Thibodeaux told investigators from the Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee. He estimated that 10 to 15 buses might have been diverted by the Navy. Thibodeaux said it was only when he showed his badge and said "you guys are going to jail" that the supposed contractors admitted they were Department of Defense personnel trying to get the families of New Orleans Navy personnel out of the city. Some of the Navy personnel were driving Cadillacs that Thibodeaux said he believes were taken from a local car dealership. After their confrontation, Thibodeaux said, the Guard helped evacuate the Navy families. "After we did that, we had no issues, and they stayed until probably about 7:30 on Thursday night," Thibodeaux said, according to a transcript provided by the Senate committee. "They came to me and said, 'We're done. The families are all gone. Thanks for the help. We're leaving.' " Thibodeaux didn't speculate on why the Navy personnel pretended to be contractors.

What a bunch of BS! Now they are trying to blame the Navy because Nagin was in Baton Rouge instead of in New Orleans running the show.

They are also saying that Navy personel stole Cadillacs from the dealer.

I live in Slidell which is on the North End of the I-10 twin span. I stayed for Ivan and I stayed for Katrina. During Ivan the people were told to evacuate. They didn't. If they could not evacuate they were told to come to the Superdome and bring food and water because they would need it. They showed up but didn't bring adequate food and water. In the aftermath of Ivan, which missed, Nagin said that in the future city buses would have to be used to evacuate those who couldn't. And they would need to give a warning sooner. Then came Katrina. It was a repeat of the Ivan debacle except this time it hit! I must say that I liked Nagin personally, until his Chocolate City comments.

The whole wire-tap offensive against Bush must be tanking in the polls. How many stories have there been in the last two days about why Bush let Hackensack get hit with a bomb and went to rescue Lois and Jimmy instead?

Yeah...no chit!!! ;)

I do not have a problem with the Navy getting their families out of NO by any means necessary....it's not like anyone else was doing anything about it....

The Navy did what they were suppose to do. Dependents leave area...sailors are left behind. Sounds like they followed their emergency plan.

Isn't the same with police officers? They get their dependents out of harms way before the storm hits. How can a police officer do their job correctly if they are worried about their love ones being safe?
