Maybe it IS hero worship. But you know what? The object of that affection has usually done something to engender that response in people. IOW they earn it. I'd much rather know that Ollie North has my back than you.
It speaks volumes that for all the rudeness I've personally received in this thread not a one of you has refuted the unflattering truth about North - because you cant. North sold weapons to a known enemy, to reward the terrorist scum who killed 241 real Marine heroes in Beruit. There are plenty of real American military heroes out there, who never broke the law, shredded documents and cowtowed to terrorists. You can gush about how handsome he is or fantasize about how he'd have your back in a barfight - the real Oliver North is known to history as a terrorist aiding liar who parlayed his telegenic looks into a second life as a right wing talk radio entertainer.
It boils down to a question of personality or principal, you might appreciate his public persona but he violated basic American principals when he aided the enemy.
