Rep. Tom Tancredo (R.-Colo.) didn’t hold back in his criticism of President Bush this morning at the Conservative Political Action Conference—delivering what amounted to a presidential stump speech that could have easily been delivered in New Hampshire or Iowa.
Tancredo attacked the administration for its support of a guest-worker program for illegal aliens and its big-spending ways on education and Medicare prescription drugs.
“It is the President who is out of step with his party, not Tom Tancredo,” the Colorado Republican said to applause at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Northwest Washington, D.C.
Tancredo called for the repeal of two programs offered by President Bush: the No Child Left Behind Act and the Medicare prescription drug program. Both expanded the cost of government and drew the scorn of conservatives in Congress.
Tancredo said the Big Government policies of the Bush administration need to be halted. He said conservatives must return the GOP to a “party of individual rights and shouldn’t afraid to say it.”

I'm not saying that they won't want to stay. I know I would if I were in their shoes.
But if we have a guest worker program with the control necessary to take those workers back, what's the difference from what things are like now?

I saw your screen name and that is what finally got me to look at this thread. :) I've been very busy, working for a local paper. Hey, I got my local town to spend some money for snow plows; we had a wheel fall off of a snowplow in the middle of a snowstorm; I talked to every guy at public works, and my title was something like "The wheels have come off!" LOL!!!
Anyway... I lived in Colorado for ten years, and I am/was a huge fan of Tom Tancredo. He is a smart man who is very able to bring important issues to people, and illegal immigration is a very big issue in Colorado, Texas (lived there, too), etc., and other border/magnet states. Nationally, though, I'm not sure.
At the risk of sounding like an idiot because I haven't had the chance to read through this thread, I don't think he is electable on a national level. One issue is not enough to carry a candidate through the primaries, especially if, as you say, a majority of people aren't worried.
So these are my thoughts without having read through the thread. :) I guess I just wanted to say hi, and thanks again for your service, Mike.
Hey... today I was able to connect the Pentagon with our local mayor, who wanted to write a letter of condolence to the mother of a guy who was born in this Canadian town, but gave up his citizenship to join the US military; he died in the recent Blackhawk helicopter crash.
I spent a lot of time trying to do this. And today I thanked the mayor's aide; I said, "I am an American citizen and I appreciate that he will take the time to write a letter."
Whew... I've gotten wayyyyy off topic, huh?! LOL

Removing the nutjobs like Tancredo from the debate so that the adults can decide on a rational solution would be a good start.
Governors have executive/CEO experience in decision-making. Members of congress have experience in deal making. Two vastly different things.
The President needs to be able to lead, to make tough decisions--it's the rest of his staff that do the deals.
Or maybe I'm watching too much 24. ;)

What about the presidents proposal makes the impossible (removing illegal aliens) possible politically, logistically etc? If you dont have a healthy skepticism about claims to the contrary then I dont know what to tell you. p>
That is the one thing I can't stand.
It is the cause of the decline of Western civilization.
We can't be friends anymore if you are part of that.
So, although I disagreed with the President, he is doing a bang-up job as Commander in Chief, and I am not going to weaken him by constantly carping about those things I don't agree with.
I am mostly interested in my grandchildren growing up under Western Civilization, you see. Highway bills, farm bills, and all of the rest can be revised at a time when we don't have the country perilously close to choosing democrats (who would get us all killed).
So, grumble away, and pontificate about your conservative principles. My main goal is the survival of this nation, and President Bush is doing everything he can to defend it.
(Except for the border issue, and I do think there might be more going on there than I thought, ever since I heard Chernoff speak about the budget today.)
As I tried to explain earlier, I have no concept of the big picture. Neither do you. I refuse to be pulled around by a ring through my nose.
My only trust is that the prez does see the big picture. He misdirects to the left as he accomplishes to the right.

As for my service, as some have been so insistent on pointing out, I will say that I was over in Iraq as a contractor.
It really sucks that I have to say that right off of the bat because some just love to assume such things.
Anyway, I agree with you. His message isn't the problem, it's the lack of heat he is getting on that message. At least for me.
Wow. You must not be in Toronto or in Ontario huh? :) I say that mainly because it isn't every day that a mayor of a town that a person gave up his citizenship too would write to the Pentagon.
I thought it unworthy. Cliff? I see the friggin' alps ...
By the way, "forced" is your cross to bear. All I said is that he was effectively absolved when his enemies went back on their word first.
