I guess parafin will have to do ,since they already took Scotchgard and now are taking Teflon away from us!

Calling Reagan the Parafined President doesn;t sound as slick as Teflon.

"since they already took Scotchgard and now are taking Teflon away from us!"

I'm actually pretty fond of Kiwi Camp Dry.

It's silicone based and very water repellent but still allows fabric to breath. It doesn't, however, have the wind cutting properties of parafin impregnated cloth. I've found that the kiwi does need to be reapplied after 3-4 heavy exposures (being outside for an 8-hour day during a heavy rain.) With just light exposure for a short period to light rains (walking to the corner store and back home during a drizzle) it will last 6 months.

Another cool thing about Camp Dry is that you can use it on maps, temporary cardboard or paper signs (i.e. 'garage sale!') and it works pretty well, although you'll need an indelible marker to write on it.

I'm still testing parafin cloth to see how long it will maintain it's water repellency...

how many have you found in your chicken coop?...........

Oh, certainly no more than two or three. If, by chicken coop you mean "basement" and by violins you mean "hammers".

Wouldn't it have deteriorated from the elements...

..I can't think a chicken coop would have good insulation

Sounds more like it was a barn than an American style coop. Surely his grandfather wanted to protect it for a long time. It probably was wrapped in some sort of protection or package. I doubt if the grandfather just laid a Strad on the rafters and hoped for the best..........

According to Santa Cruz Guitars (I LOVE my Tony Rice!!) they keep their facilities stable at 47% humidity. Low humidity is KILLER. I keep the humidifier going all winter and all axes sit in the living room on stands. In the summer, I don't worry about it as much.

Oh yeah ( I knew I forgot something)

From what I've been told, strings rusting quickly, is usually due to low pH in the oils on your fingers. Same thing happens to me. I always figured it was my acid personality!
