Given the existence of a pit tomb (no remains), also probably of late 18th dynasty, and KV55's chaotic contents, I'm still pulling for these mummies to be from the royal family of the Amarna period.

According to the MSNBC article you posted a link to, Zahi/Zowie is going to the tomb tomorrow.

The tomb may not have been meant for royalty, but neither was DB320, where most of the royal mummies turned up, and not all of the New Kingdom pharaohs are accounted for. Now I'm wondering if Ay or Horemheb got moved here.
