January Was America's Warmest on Record

Wednesday February 8, 2006 12:16 AM

By RANDOLPH E. SCHMID

AP Science Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) - Recording the warmest January on record allowed Americans to save on their heating, but like all good things, last month's mildness seems to have been too good to last.

The country's average temperature for the month was 39.5 degrees Fahrenheit, 8.5 degrees above average for January, the National Climatic Data Center said Tuesday. The old record for January warmth was 37.3 degrees set in 1953.

On the other hand, while much of the United States was basking in warm weather, parts of Europe and Asia were being battered by bitter cold. Climate details for the rest of the world for January are expected to be available next week.

During the month the jet stream, a strong high-altitude wind that guides weather fronts from west to east, stayed unusually far to the north, keeping the coldest air in Canada and Alaska, the agency said.

Keeping that cold air to the north allowed mild Pacific air to moderate temperatures across the contiguous states, leading to the warm conditions.

Considering they have no records past about the late 1800s, it is a completely irrelevent statement.

What is this nonsense? I'm in New Orleans, and normally we'd be wearing shorts by now! I'm still wearing a sweater and jacket!

Global warming causes warm winters, cold winters, floods, droughts, hurricanes, red tide, deforestation, over vegitation, etc. etc. etc. It's the perfect boogeyman.

I wore a long-sleeved shirt for a while the other day. So much for the concept of winter...

That cold weather you are experiencing is obviously caused by global warming.

Well, slow down a bit - the article leads off with this gem: "like all good things, last month's mildness seems to have been too good to last" - does that mean February has been cold? It does seem like someone is at least admitting warmer temps has SOME benefits.

January was the coldest month in Fairbanks since 1971. Today it is +25 and even the birds are not bothering to fluff up their feathers.

It's OK with me. I wasn't looking forward to this winter's fuel bills.

Well, that does it - I'm climbing into bed, pulling the covers over my head and not coming out until global warming has changed into the predicted mini ice age.

Blast! Stupid warmth, making it cold! Hey, I've got an idea for a new motto for the Enviro-psychos:

Hot is cold

Vandalism is peace

Mother Gaia is watching you.

January Was America's Warmest On Record

Not in MY world. -62 was far from being "warm" and the -50's and -40's weren't much better. Now, -20 to -30? THAT'S warm. LOL

Good. I hope spring starts tomorrow, complete with 70 degree days.

The warmer January is actually an argument against global warming, as global warming will result in an instant ice age, right?

And? It was also the coldest January in Central Europe since the 1950s. I guess this means that there is global warming in the US, and global colding in Europe. /sarc
