NBC: U.S. citizen accused of aiding al-Zarqawi
NBC ^ | Febuary 7 2006 | Lisa Myers, Jim Popkin

Posted on 02/07/2006 4:40:30 PM PST by jmc1969

The American, Shawqi Omar, who lived for years in Minnesota, Utah and North Carolina, allegedly met with al-Zarqawi on numerous occasions and is related to the al-Qaida leader, through marriage, new federal court documents reveal. Omar is also one of 12 people charged Oct. 17, 2004, with plotting a chemical attack in Jordan.

Omar traveled to Iraq in 2002, according to court records and family interviews, to pick up reconstruction business.

The general said Omar had “several weapons and Improvised Explosive Device-making materials in his home,” and that there is “testimonial evidence of Mr. Omar's numerous private meetings with al-Zarqawi.”

The declaration adds that Omar “was captured harboring an Iraqi insurgent and four Jordanian foreign fighters" and that they all conducted surveillance of potential kidnap victims within Baghdad. Omar allegedly used his English skills “to visit Baghdad hotels in order to entice foreigners to return to Omar's home for the purpose of their kidnap and ransom.”

Omar's family denies his terrorist connections. His lawyers said that, as an American citizen, Omar should be allowed to face charges in an American court of law. Currently, he is being held by the U.S. coalition forces in an Iraqi prison as an “enemy combatant.” He faces charges in the Central Criminal Court of Iraq.

The Jordan Times reported that the 2004 plot, which was part of a larger conspiracy to attack the Jordanian Prime Ministry and the U.S. Embassy in Amman, involved using trucks carrying 20 tons of chemicals. Experts told the newspaper that the chemicals could have killed 80,000 people and injured 160,000 others.

He's probably already nominated for next year's "John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage" awards.

They were picked up by Jordan, they were a wide array of industral chemicals that when mixed together create a toxic chemical cloud.

Looks like Omar fears the Iraqi courts. Three reasons.

1. This crap is going on in their own backyard, so they have absolutely no tolerance.

2. Would probably get death (or worse).

3. He knows that the Dims/ACLU will do everything in their power to free one of their comrades!

He was commiting crimes in a foreign land. The Iraqi courts have jurisdiction.

It came from Iraq, I remember one of the terrorists in court said Zarqawi was planning this attack on Jordan a year before the US invaded Iraq.

Omar's family denies his terrorist connections

Would that be the family on the Zarqawi side?

Didn't reconstruction business start AFTER the 2003 war?
