WASHINGTON -- Conservative groups urged Congress on Tuesday to end all federal funds to AARP, saying it was wrong for the seniors group to be receiving tens of millions in taxpayer dollars at the same time it was campaigning against administration policies.
"AARP does not have the right to expect taxpayers to foot the bill to help advance its political agenda," said John Carlisle of the National Legal and Policy Center, author of a paper on federal funding to the seniors organization.
David Sloane, senior managing director of government relations at AARP, said the paper was a "sour grapes" response to the coalition's failure to advance President Bush's proposal to privatize Social Security, which AARP opposed.
Sloane said AARP participates in competitive bidding for all federal grants and has shown good results in its federally backed program to find employment for low-income seniors. He said financing for the foundation that runs such programs is totally separated from other AARP activities, including political lobbying.

Planned a little vacation for hubby and I last year. As I went to various hotel websites to check on rates, every hotel chain that had an AARP rate called it an "AARP / Senior" rate. It would apply to ANY senior, whether they were members of AARP or not. There are plenty of good discounts to be had without joining. Same with restaurants.
Strong lobbyists. You know, special interests.
This Senior despises this vile organization that succeeds ripping off our grandchildren for no valid reason.
The Wall Street Journal has been campaigning for this for at least ten years and WOW!, here it is. Zip a dee do dah.
However AARP does receive the money thru the lawsuits they won from the Federal Government!
the AARP hierarchy receives megabucks in salaries; the organization is leftist and worthless. Its main attraction is discount hotel and motel rooms, but I soon learned that I had other statuses which got me even better rates than AARP. And their magazine really sucks. I mean r-e-a-l-l-y!!
AARP ...Harry Belafonte ...their "Man of The Year".
Thanks!
Defund the Geritol Mafia!
And how much of our tax-payer $$ goes to the ACLU and NPR?
Eh? Speak up Sonny!
Discuss.
BTTT
In fact, it's increased during his administration.
PISS ON THE AARP.
AARP started out as a good idea but went downhill and to the left as it aged.
Anything bad happening to this selfish group of AARP leaders is to good for them.
