February 7, 2006--State Treasurer Judy Baar Topinka (R) leads Governor Rod Blagojevich in an early look at the 2006 campaign for Governor of Illinois.
The latest Rasmussen Reports survey shows Topinka with 48% of the vote while the incumbent Governor attracts 37%.
Blagojevich does better against two other potential challengers. Blagojevich is tied with Ron Gidwitz at 40%. The Governor holds a very slight lead over Jim Oberweis, 43% to 39%.
None of the candidates are viewed favorably by 50% or more of Illinois voters. Blagojevich and Topinka have far higher name recognition than the other candidates.
Topinka is viewed favorably by 46% of voters and unfavorably by 30%. For Blagojevich, it's 40% favorable and 49% unfavorable. For Gidwitz and Oberweis, a plurality don't know enough about them to have an opinion.

Better in a garage can than down the toliet (Blago/Topinka vote)
Clearly you were never going to vote for the GOP candidate anyways, as your first post here at FR is some article from the LP website.
I don't keep real close tabs on that issue, but I saw there was a post here from 2002 that the Illinois Gun Owners PAC endorsed her for treasurer. Her campaign website doesn't have anything that I could find, so I don't know if she's moved away from a favorable position.
I thought the Libertarians weren't running anyone.
I only see Brady signs in NW and Centeral Illinos
There is little chance that Blago will lose. We are talking about Illinois here remember not a state with a rational electorate.
LIbertarians are a joke. I will vote for one when there is no candidate running against the RAT but that is the only time.
Bingo
Let me guess,,Andy Card backs the Democrat.?
Don't know it that is the case but do know that it would not matter since only the politically astute even know who he is.
Good I hope that whoever the GOP nominee is wins this state back. I am tired of hearing how we are going to lose seats in congress and in state houses this year. If we keep a majority even if it is a reduced one at this rate i will be happy.
Blago's re-elect numbers are *terrible* and it shows that it doesnt matter who goes up against him, they have a shot.
All this muttering about Topinka misses the boat: Who will win the GOP primary?
Get the best conservative candidate you can to win and ...
Take out Blago!
It would be a great GOP pickup to offset the Dems pickup of NY. Don't rule out Lynn Swann in PA either.
"Explain to me, how any politician, with 50% negatives, whose most conservative challenger is within the MoE, and who is losing by 11 points to his most likely challenger, will "easily" be reelected."
I agree. The Republicans should be thrilled with this polling result. It would be an awesome pickup to win back the Governoship in Illinois.
Gov Perry should win his re-election race here in Texas, dunno about how well Arnie is doing. New York may be a lost cause ... so Illinois will help balance out losses elsewhere.
Like your sig. George Allen for President!
You beat me to it! Polls in Illinois/Pennsylvania are meaningless because they make no attempt to model the polling results on the actual voting demographics of those states. The Lynn Swann polls look nice too, but suffer from the same effect.
Thanks. I'm more informed now.
There are very few phones at cemeteries, so these phone polls tend to miss dead voters who tend to turn out well in Ill. elections...
Yeah, she loathes it. There's never been a Daley sponsored Gun Control bill she didn't LOVE.
Assault weapons - ban them. However, she'll fight to make sure someone's 11 y.o. daughter can get an abortion on demand. She's a detestable pig and part of the George Ryan criminal crony cabal.
Hi-cap mags - ban them.
.50 cal Rifles - ban them.
Concealed Carry - fugetaboutit
Gun show loophole (gag) - Close it!
There's ZERO difference between her and the democrats - period.
Lordy, lordy--you folks don't stand a chance, do you? You have my sympathy.
Thanks for the sympathy, BUT all is not lost.
For one, this article is hogwash. Judas Barr Topinkavich (as we call her) will NOT win the primary. We are tired of that old Ryan crowd, they will be G-O-N-E. Business man (Dairy Farmer) Jim Oberweis is gaining fast in all realistic and honest polls. He is a conservative and not connected to those crooks. He's pro-life, pro gun and ANTI illegal - really anti illegal.
Plus our current ijit boy gov and Daley sock puppet 'Blago' is self destructing. If it wasn't for Daley holding a gun to the Dems heads, the jerk couldn't get anything passed in Springfield. And the scandals surrounding his admin are almost reaching that of ex gov George Ryan (RINO and soon to be convicted felon) who single handedly ruined the IL GOP with his overt corruption.
Come Nov, IL will be back in GOP hands. Conservative GOP hands :-)
