Let's be honest: Multiculturalism can kill a nation
James P. Pinkerton
The lesson of the Muhammad cartoon controversy is: Multiculturalism between nations is inevitable, but multiculturalism within nations is disastrous.
Protests, many of them violent, have erupted across the world - including Europe, Australia and New Zealand - after the appearance of cartoons depicting the Muslim prophet Muhammad in unflattering ways.
It's time for all of us to recognize that different cultures have different values. For the West, broadly speaking, the highest value is freedom, including freedom of religious expression. But for the Muslim world, the highest value seems to be Islamic piety. To draw such a distinction between West and East is not to endorse cultural relativism; it's simply to take note of cultural reality.
Not everyone thirsts for liberty. Plenty of people around the world, maybe most, thirst instead to restrict liberty. And so, if Muslim crowds can't kill the Muhammad-mocking Danish cartoonists for "blasphemy," they will settle for burning Western embassies, at least for now.
Even the government of Afghanistan - where Danish forces have contributed to Western "democracy-building" - joined in the protests. Afghan President Hamid Karzai, who would not be in power save for Western intervention, added his voice to the chorus: "Any insult to the Holy Prophet is an insult to more than 1 billion Muslims, and an act like this must never be allowed to be repeated."
It should be obvious that our effort to influence Muslim public opinion in a positive way has reached a dead end. That is, we advocate democratization but get Islamization. That process empowers the likes of Hamas in Palestine and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in Iran.
Even Turkey, commonly regarded as the most democratic and pro-American Muslim country, is changing its stance.

In the words of the great Willie Don Shaffer, "Multiculturalism is a bunch of crap"!!
It can, it has, and it continues to.
Multiculturalism is fine. This country is based on it; Europeans, Asians, Arabs, Africans, Latin Americans all contributed to our culture as it is.
The BIG difference is that those people came here for freedom and to build a better life, as opposed to those fundie Muslims who come to build an oppressive theocracy.
Any future Muslim immigrant to any Western country, including those applying for asylum, should, before be admitted, be shown all these cartoons and asked to sign a statement sasyign that they understand that this freedom of the press is the norm in their newly adopted country, or they can be sent back immediately..
Attempting to win the "hearts and minds" of people who have neither is indeed a dead end road.
Muhammed started Islam, the font and justification of modern terror. Islamofascists following Islam's dictates murder innocent women and children as a proper application of their religious requirements.
Therefore, Islam Sucks (as practiced by the extremists.)
There. I've insulted Islam (I hope.)
Muslims who insist that my freedom of conscience and speech "must never be allowed" put themselves permanently at war with me.
I refuse to be subjugated to their inordinate sensitivity.
It would not be too cynical to infer that multiculturalism has been pushed here by the Left precisely in order to kill America. Certainly multiculturalism was intended to subdue the older America -- the free and Christian and good America, as it was understood from colonial times.
Pinkerton is going against the liberal canon by saying this. I am sure he will be mocked and decried by the establishment soon enough.
Even if, in this case, he is right.
Very odd for an American to be against multiculturalism as the US is the most multicultural nation! Perhaps he really means multireligional? Are the 5.2 million muslims in the US causing problems?
This country is based on multiculturalism? Since when? Do we celebrate Hindu holidays? Do our courts operate using any other language than english? Read Ted Roosevelt's hyphenated American essay; that's the truly American point of view. It is time to lose the hyphen.
If multiculturalism were inherently bad, and recognized as such by any rational person, why was it Europeans thought it useful to bring African slaves to America?
America is a 'multicultural nation'? Who knew? I didn't get the memo! Oh yes, I remember, we have the Amish, and the odd hippie commune that doesn't subscribe to the shared cultural values, so I guess that makes us 'multi-culti', like France and Germany of today. Melting pot ain't multi-culti folks!
"This country is based on multiculturalism? Since when?"
No kidding. Multi-culti happens when the melting pot is removed from the heat and no more melting occurs.
The only reason you people speak English is that my country was overrun by illegal aliens.
Melting pot is fine. Multiculturalism is deadly.
