LITHONIA, Ga. - Shivering in near-freezing temperatures, thousands of people waited hours in line Tuesday for one last chance to say goodbye to Coretta Scott King before her funeral.
"There's one word to describe going to go see Coretta historic. It's good to finally see her at peace," said Robert Jackson, a 34-year-old financial consultant from Atlanta whose 10-year-old daughter, Ebony, persuaded him to take her to the visitation.
The lines had already started forming by 3 a.m. By the time the doors opened at 6:30 a.m., people toward the end were warned that if they stayed in line they likely wouldn't get into the funeral because of long lines that were already forming there.
An estimated 10,000 people, including four U.S. presidents, were expected to attend the midday funeral at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, where King's daughter Bernice is a minister.
Criticism of pandering is not whining, friend. It is pointing to the obvious, and for some less-obvious, aspects of our modern politicos. Anything to get a vote.
I will post the same question to you. What did this woman DO of any note?
"Casn you explaian what she did that makes her worthy of such an honor."
She didn't do much on her own. It was all her husband. But she gives them a great chance to pander. No politician turns down a chance to pander.
Is this race-pandering or was she a power in race relations? Or is it out of respect for her husbands work? I honestly don't know.
"You forgot Nancy Reagan"
Yes, I did. Thank you. I also forgot Hillary and Caroline Kennedy. Trisha and Julie Nixon, Amy Carter...
I think it's out of respect for her husband's work. Since he died, she has done three major things: Made his birthday a national holiday. Established his museum. Continued to speak on civil rights.
nancy reagan
I was wondering that too. The first few times I heard someone say "President Clinton" after he was out of office, I thought it was just a wishful slip up. But now they do it all the time.
Someone explain that one for me...
Race-pandering it is. Can you imagine the howling from the left if President Bush did not attend?
If abortion doesn't cause the civil war, this race-baiting will.
"I will post the same question to you. What did this woman DO of any note? "
I don't know of Mrs. King's relationship to the Clintons, but I do know that she attended Bush 43's Inauguration and has visited the White House more than once since 2001. She was a friend to the Bush family. As for what Mrs. King did, well, aside from building the King Center, as I understand, a whole lot of humanitarian work worldwide. I can't say I've done as much. Can you?
She was married to a philandering Communist. Does that count?
"Is there ANY White Women ANYWHERE such that 4 U.S. Presidents would attend the funeral.....????
"
Sure. Barbara Bush. If she died, they'd come. Get over your baggage.
Friend,
Before you respond to my post, let me aplogize now for asking "can you?" That wasn't right. Peace.
The family and people close to the deceased that will attend this funeral bad mouth our current President at every turn and couldn't care less if he was there. Same with the media whores JJ and Sharpton et. al. It is a hollow jesture on GW's part, he is not wanted and either whay he will be criticized for something pertaining to the funeral. She was not the "icon" ( I hate that word but I am being polite ) it was her womanzing hubby.
I'd stay home and send flowers.
"Casn you explaian what she did that makes her worthy of such an honor. "
Yesn [sic], I can explaian [sic]. I'm not going to, though. The fact that President Bush and former Presidents are going to attend is explanation enough. They seem to think this funeral is worth their attendance. You don't, so I think you should not attend.
Don't tell me, he has a son named "Ivory."
