A Syrian sidestep?

About those Iraqi WMDs: More signs are pointing to a neighborly transfer

Last week a man who had been deputy chief of Saddam Hussein's air force claimed Iraq moved weapons of mass destruction into Syria before the war began.

But Mr. Sada's is only the most recent of a series of accounts by people in a position to speak with authority who say (some of) Saddam's chemical and biological weapons wound up in Syria.

Last month Moshe Yaalon, who was Israel's top general at the time, said Iraq transported WMD to Syria six weeks before Operation Iraqi Freedom began.

Last March, John A. Shaw, a former U.S. deputy undersecretary of defense for international technology security, said Russian Spetsnaz units moved WMD to Syria and Lebanon's Bekaa Valley.

Retired Marine Lt. Gen. Michael DeLong was deputy commander of Central Command during Operation Iraqi Freedom. In September 2004, he told WABC radio that "I do know for a fact that some of those weapons went into Syria, Lebanon and Iran."

In January 2004, David Kay, the first head of the Iraq Survey Group which conducted the search for Saddam's WMD, told a British newspaper there was evidence unspecified materials had been moved to Syria from Iraq shortly before the war.

Also that month, Nizar Nayuf, a Syrian journalist who defected to an undisclosed European country, told a Dutch newspaper he knew of three sites where Iraq's WMD was being kept. They were the town of al Baida near the city of Hama in northern Syria;

In an addendum to his final report last April, Charles Duelfer, who succeeded David Kay as head of the Iraq Survey Group, said he couldn't rule out a transfer of WMD from Iraq to Syria.

I said it, too.

The problem is the WMDs went out the back door (Syria) as we came in the front. Just ask the Germans and French and Russians who helped to remove them.

Don't forget, Clinton lied too, to the point of being specific- "Saddam has at least 6,000 chemical warheads unaccounted for from the war with Iran and the Gulf War"

Why hasn't the Administration leveled with the public on this?

My take is that we know and have told Syria so. We also know where they are and are choosing the right time to reveal this info.

Why do you suppose they haven't used those weapons?

Also blame all the liberal spinmiesters who insisted that Bush needed to sit on his hands until the last possible peace initiative had played out. It was quite plain what Saddam did with that extra time.

I would guess they would be worried about significant 'blow back'. Besides, it would be less risky to transfer them to terrorists, that is if they were sure they would not then be used against themselves. Hmmm, perhaps sitting on them in the Bekaa valley was the wiser decision of all the options.

The masters of Rope-A-Dope will get off the ropes very soon. The RATS are about like George Foreman was in round 7.

Given Lebanese port facilities, those weapons could be anywhere in the world by now, and problably are.

The first time I heard the suggestion that there may not, in fact, have been WMD's, I thought to myself "they're in Syria". It was an obvious conclusion, based on:

I have no doubt that Iraq's WMD's are in Syria. It speaks to the weakness the vaunted "CIA Analysts" that the US Government couldn't figure this out three years ago.

It doesn't make sense that we would cooperate with Syria in covering up this transfer.

Maybe we holding it over their heads and if Assad steps out of line..

The Administration has been deliberating holding back revealing the Sadaam archives at a big political cost.
