The protesters, chanting "God is Greatest" and "Europe, Europe, shame on you", smashed all the diplomatic mission's windows with stones and then tried to hurl petrol bombs inside.
Austria currently holds the presidency of the European Union. Protesters also waved placards and shouted slogans against the EU's stance on Iran's nuclear programme.
The bombs exploded in flames against metal grilles guarding the windows.
Further demonstrations were planned for later on Monday outside the Danish and Norwegian embassies in Tehran.

I think you are right. This has little to do with the cartoons. They are getting ready for a war.
Proof positive once again that we're in a war between radical Muslims and the civilized western world. Maybe in another decade or so, that fact will finally percolate into the consciousness of Europeans.
From the first, their intent has been to incite a violent response from the West against all muslims so they can claim they are only "defending themselves" and feel justified in using all available force against us. I think President Bush was well aware of this when he stated that we were not at war with Islam. He took away their greatest tool for rallying the faithful and narrowed it down to the worst among them.
YOU ARE ONE OF THE FEW WHO SEEMS TO GET IT!!!
You may or may know how spot on your assessment is. I can prove those suspicions to be correct.
There's two things that can be observed about the current cartoon controversy that should make you wonder about some kinda hidden agenda here.
First, the Danish cartoon was published in Sept. 2005. Why is it only now that it's payed attention to?
Secondly, watching the demonstrations in the middle east and elsewhere of the muslims burning the dutch flag in great numbers. Where did they come across all those dutch flags?
I don't care what country your in, getting your hands on flags that belong to another country within your own country usually takes a special order which takes time to get. This was NOT a spontaneous uprising.
Somebody has pre-planned and organized the whole thing.
Third, the timing. It's awfully coincidental that this uprising started exactly the same time as the IAEA voted to refer Iran to the UN security council, and subsequently Iran to announce full scale enrichment to resume.
Now, lets backtrack and start fitting the pieces together.
On Sept 17th 2005, Mahmood Ahmadinejad Irans president address' the UN in New York, there he claims he was enveloped in a strong light, not stage lighting or anything like that, but a supernatural light. This he has taken as a sign of sorts that he has been called to make way for the Muslim "Mahdi".
The Mahdi is the muslim version of "Messiah". He has made no effort to hide this fact and has been very vocal about it. He has even said he hopes to hasten that coming.
Article on Sept 9 2005:
http://www.atimes.com/atimes/Middle_East/GI09Ak01.html
There is an anti-Sunni semi-clandestine society, called the Hojjatieh that Ahmadinejad is in bed with.
When the first danish cartoon was published back in Sept. '05 this Hojjatieh group came to and met with local danish Imam's to discuss what to do about the blasphymes cartoons.
If you've read the linked article you saw that this groups doctrine is to hasten the coming of the mahdi through the spread of chaos in order to bring about a true islamic republic.
If this current situation over a flippin' cartoon isn't chaotic, then somebody needs to slap Webster to re-write the definition of the word chaos then.
Further demonstrations were planned for later on Monday outside the Danish and Norwegian embassies in Tehran.
It was the Austrian Embassy. It would not be in Austria but Tehran,Iran.
Yet those who follow Jesus and Moses teaching are infidels? That would make the Muslims traitors to their own faith. If they believe Jesus and Moses are prophets of the same God as Mohammed, then the conclusion would be that those who follow the teachings of Jesus and Moses are just as entitled to practice their faith, and just as entitled to the glory of Heaven.
"This riduculous rampage over a cartoon by the Muslim masses should wake up the world to the danger of Iran having a nuclear bomb"
Great post!! You said it all, penelopesire. It's too bad those losers in Congress can't see that we are not dealing with rational people. We have a high-jacked religous sect with millions of uneducated people with a hair trigger mentality being whipped into a frenzy by their so-called leaders. They can't see this timebomb because their own egos are standing in the way and they are too busy blowing up their own feathers, hoping to appear on every television show that will push their agenda.
I understand, but assumed that each embassy has its own protection force?
Maybe they do, but are not armed?
None of the attacked embassies so far have any significant armed troop presence. Those nations didn't see a point to it, and they hire local security to deal with problems. To the Continental Euro-Pee-Ons: Now do you understand why we have heavily armed troop detachments at our embassies?
thanks. Wished I had spell-checked it though...lol
I agree. Part of me hopes that they do. Then we can get it overwith. I'm tired of the pussyfooting with "diplomacy" and worthless "UN resolutions."
"Hopefully more than a few liberal's eyes will be opened, but I'm not holding my breath."
My sister is a liberal, but 911 woke her up! So there is hope. She voted for Bush in the last election.
Ping!
My brain must be numbed by this thread. I'm always picking up typos but didn't notice any.
They are armed but they are only a few. Mostly a bodyguard and security force. Most Embassies now have a secure area that is fortified however it cannot handle thousands or even hundreds of protesters. Outside security for a Embassy is provided by the host country and any action by a Embassy on protesters outside of the Embassy is a attack on the host country.
"Ummm....Iceland! We haven't gotten mad at Iceland yet!"
(Together) "Death to Iceland!"
The Iranian people are Persians. My guess is this "demonstration" was staged by the Islamic government.
lol...I always try to type too fast and make typos all the time.
