Cristopher Hitchens on the Islamic Cartoon Uproar
Slate ^ | Feb. 4, 2006 | Christopher Hitchens

Posted on 02/06/2006 7:20:47 AM PST by van_erwin

As well as being a small masterpiece of inarticulacy and self-abnegation, the statement from the State Department about this week's international Muslim pogrom against the free press was also accidentally accurate.

"Anti-Muslim images are as unacceptable as anti-Semitic images, as anti-Christian images, or any other religious belief."

Thus the hapless Sean McCormack, reading painfully slowly from what was reported as a prepared government statement. How appalling for the country of the First Amendment to be represented by such an administration. What does he mean "unacceptable"? That it should be forbidden? And how abysmal that a "spokesman" cannot distinguish between criticism of a belief system and slander against a people. However, the illiterate McCormack is right in unintentionally comparing racist libels to religious faith. Many people have pointed out that the Arab and Muslim press is replete with anti-Jewish caricature, often of the most lurid and hateful kind...

Hitchens bump!

That stament from State was reprehensible. How did Condi Rice let that go out and who's in charge over there, the careerists or the Administration?

They are just trying to appease our new "buds" in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Like that line from Full Metal Jacket, "They took my freedom and gave it to the gooks, but they don't want it."

Hitch is right about the present administrations attitude on this subject.

In a word? PATHETIC!

Don't kill me, but isn't Hitchen's suing the Gov't for potentionally spying on him?

It's painful to listen to this appeasement.
But my humble guess is this: Dubya knows what he's doing.
He's buying time to:
1. Get us moved as far as possible to energy sources not controlled
by our enemies
2. Get our valuable asset of the world's best warriors out of
Afghanistan and Iraq as much as possible...

BEFORE some Islamic nut/state lights off a nuke.
The clock is running and we're in a race for survival.

Yup. Diplomacy is the art of saying, "Nice doggy" while looking for a rock.

I don't think we've found a big enough rock yet. Or else we want a couple of rocks in reserve if the first one doesn't do the job.

The president is buying time.

In this aspect, the Bush administration has lost it's way. I know many dyed-in-wool GOPers who are very disgusted at this new kowtowing to Islamofascism in which the Bush adminstration is seemingly engaged. if only the rank and file would get as outraged about this as they did about Harriet Myers.

"Piss Christ is a controversial photograph by American photographer Andres Serrano. It depicts a small plastic crucifix submerged in a glass of the artist's urine. Some have suggested that the glass may also contain the artist's blood. The piece was underwritten by the National Endowment for the Arts, which offers support and funding for projects that exhibit artistic excellence."

Where would Jihad Joe hit? NYC? Chicago? Boston? L.A.?

If they use a nuke on us it will be in a big city (bastion of liberalism). Eventually the liberals will get the message that Haji is NOT their friend.

Why not just take back
the oil fields that were taken
by force from the West?

I have not heard that..... maybe he is. 'Iconoclastic' is a mild description of Hitchens, but he is 100% behind what we are doing in iraq and the WOT.

We cannot possibly adjust enough to please the fanatics, and it is degrading to make the attempt.

How true.

"Many people have pointed out that the Arab and Muslim press is replete with anti-Jewish caricature, often of the most lurid and hateful kind..."

Jews don't count, and we don't kid ourselves about it. Time to dredge up the old saying "When they came for the Jews, I wasn't Jewish, so I did nothing..."

Ahem, people, if you're not Muslim, you're all Jews now. Welcome to the tribe! Let me get you a prune danish to go with that new attitude.

I'm willing to give GW and Condi the benefit of the doubt on this one. Coming right out and poking the snake before we have the rock ready to smash it is stupid.

We are still tied up in Iraq, and as I understand it, most of our carriers need an overhaul and refit. I figure, from all the reports, we've got 18 months to two years to set everything up for a well planned and decisive strike that will hammer Iran and Syria into the stone age for the next 50 years.

If that were true then wouldn't he have made a pretty big mistake to send the Army into Iraq in the first place?

I think cutting off the money sends a direct message, and doesn't cost us troops. Let their fellow islamists pay the bill for a change.
